Assalamu Alaykum
It is well known that Allah (SWT) safeguards the noble Quran so that it remains unchanged to this day. The Injil and Tawrat, however, has been corrupted. I was researching why they were not preserved as well and found this answer:
"from what I understand, its not a matter of whether God knew what he was doing or not? Of course he knew what he was doing and that these books will eventually get corrupted. It is simply a test for the people. Will they let their ego and desire go to believe in the word of God or not? For example when God sent the Torah, the Jews were to believe and abide by it. but over time they corrupted it themselves and thus the Gospel was sent and they were to believe in that. So its basically another chance and reminder from God to the people to believe because the books and messengers are only sent for our benefit. when the final messenger and book came this was the last chance humanity got to believe and whoever believes in it today are the successful ones. its a test from God." https://au.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20130919025204AAGoJnP
But why would Allah (SWT) create us simply to test us while knowing who will succeed and who will fail and then reward or punish accordingly? I know this may be a crude example but my understanding is that it's like an exam. It is meant to test your knowledge and the ones who pass are the ones who study hard and the ones that fail do not study. Allah (SWT) knows who will study and who will not. In rebuttal to those who slander and say God is sadistic and created us just to punish us (istighfar), allowing war criminals to live to old age and children to die, that is wrong. Salvation or damnation rests on the shoulders of the people. People can choose to drink water or poison. Those who do evil and prosper in this world will suffer in Jahanam for eternity while those who do good and suffer in dunya will be rewarded with Jannah. And Allah (SWT) is all-knowing and merciful.
Please let me know if my understanding is accurate.
