Hafidh Shams al-Deen al-Dhahabi (673-748 Hijri) said in his book «Siyar a'lam al-nubala» (8/92):
ولم يبق اليوم إلا هذه المذاهب الأربعة. وقلّ من ينهض بمعرفتها كما ينبغي، فضلاً عن أن يكون مجتهداً
«No madhhab remains now, except these four madhabs. And very few people can explore these madhhabs properly, not to mention becoming mujtahid».
These words were said by Hafidh al-Dhahabi in the 8th century AH. About 650 years have passed since then.
