I've read recently that you can't invite non muslims to your house to eat food with them for pure joy. So I ask this question in the hopes I get a legitimate[SUP]​[/SUP] answer.

As long as you're not doing anything haraam there is nothing wrong with sitting with a friend who isn't Muslim or eating with them. As Muslims we should be welcoming and not 'closed-off' all the time, as long as we don't compromise our own values.

In Islam, there are rules about purification and there is a concept about contamination through contact with that which is impure. As you know, the Holy Qur'an states that the Mushrikeen are impure, hence why they are forbidden from even approaching near to the sacred Mosque.

Our beloved Prophet صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم instructed us to avoid the utensils that have been used by Jews, Christians and Magians. If we have no choice, then they have to be properly washed.

Now of course these days washing dishes that someone else has used is customary, and people usually eat from separate dishes.

However, sometimes people eat together from the same dish so you have to be careful.
