    Historical Places in Makkah Al-Mukarramah

Let us start with the cave of Hira, the place where the Wahy (revelation of the Holy Qur'an) began.

    Hira Cave

    Location: 21°27'27.1"N+39°51'33.4"E
    https://www.google.com/maps/place/Hi...4!4d39.8592756

    Significance:
It is the place where the messenger of Allah, Muhammad used to spend days and night in meditation when he reached the age of 40 years. Then one night, Allah sent the angel Jibra'eel with the first revelation of the Holy Qur'an, the first five verses of Surah Al-'Alaq.

Read! In the Name of your Lord, Who has created (all that exists), has created man from a clot (a piece of thick coagulated blood). Read! and your Lord is the Most Generous.’” [96:1-3]

This meditative temperament helped to widen the mental gap between him and his compatriots. He used to provide himself with Sawiq (barley porridge) and water and then directly head for the hills and ravines in the neighbourhood of Makkah. One of these in particular was his favourite resort — a cave named Hira’, in the Mount An-Nour. It was only two miles from Makkah, a small cave 4 yards long and 1.75 yard wide. He would always go there and invite wayfarers to share him his modest provision. He used to devote most of his time, and Ramadan in particular, to worship and meditation on the universe around him. His heart was restless about the moral evils and idolatry that were rampant among his people; he was as yet helpless because no definite course, or specific approach had been available for him to follow and rectify the ill practices around him. This solitude attended with this sort of contemplative approach must be understood in its Divine perspective. It was a preliminary stage to the period of grave responsibilities that he was to shoulder very soon.

Privacy and detachment from the impurities of life were two indispensable prerequisites for the Prophet’s soul to come into close communion with the Unseen Power that lies behind all aspects of existence in this infinite universe. It was a rich period of privacy which lasted for three years and ushered in a new era, of indissoluble contact with that Power.

    GAGRIEL BRINGS DOWN THE REVELATION:
When he was forty, the age of complete perfection at which Prophets were always ordered to disclose their Message, signs of his Prophethood started to appear and twinkle on the horizons of life; they were the true visions he used to experience for six months. The period of Prophethood was 23 years; so the period of these six months of true visions constituted an integral part of the forty-six parts of Prophethood. In Ramadan, in his third year of solitude in the cave of Hira’, Allâh’s Will desired His mercy to flow on earth and Muhammad (Peace be upon him) was honoured with Prophethood, and the light of Revelation burst upon him with some verses of the Noble Qur’ân.

As for the exact date, careful investigation into circumstantial evidence and relevant clues point directly to Monday, 21st. Ramadan at night, i.e. Au, 10, 610 A.D. with Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) exactly 40 years, 6 months and 12 days of age, i.e. 39 Gregorian years, 3 months and 22 days.

‘Aishah, the veracious, gave the following narration of that most significant event that brought the Divine light which would dispel the darkness of disbelief and ignorance. It led life down a new course and brought about the most serious amendment to the line of the history of mankind:

Forerunners of the Revelation assumed the form of true visions that would strikingly come true all the time. After that, solitude became dear to him and he would go to the cave, Hira’, to engage in Tahannuth (devotion) there for a certain number of nights before returning to his family, and then he would return for provisions for a similar stay. At length, unexpectedly, the Truth (the angel) came to him and said, “Recite.” “I cannot recite,” he [Muhammad (Peace be upon him)] said. The Prophet (Peace be upon him) described: “Then he took me and squeezed me vehemently and then let me go and repeated the order ‘Recite.’ ‘I cannot recite’ said I, and once again he squeezed me and let me till I was exhausted. Then he said: ‘Recite.’ I said ‘I cannot recite.’ He squeezed me for a third time and then let me go and said:

Read! In the Name of your Lord, Who has created (all that exists), has created man from a clot (a piece of thick coagulated blood). Read! and your Lord is the Most Generous.’” [96:1-3]

The Prophet (Peace be upon him) repeated these verses.

Re: Historical Places in Makkah Al-Mukarramah

Masjid Al-Haraam (The Grand Mosque of Makkah)

Masjid Al-Haraam is well known to everyone. It is built around Ka'bah, where Muslims face to pray 5 times a day.

    Significance:
Indeed, the first House [of worship] established for mankind was that at Makkah - blessed and a guidance for the worlds. [Aal-'Imran: 96]

    Allah says
We have certainly seen the turning of your face, [O Muhammad], toward the heaven, and We will surely turn you to a qiblah with which you will be pleased. So turn your face toward al-Masjid al-Haram. And wherever you [believers] are, turn your faces toward it [in prayer]. Indeed, those who have been given the Scripture well know that it is the truth from their Lord. And Allah is not unaware of what they do. [Al-Baqarah: 144]

    In another surah, Allah says
Indeed, those who have disbelieved and avert [people] from the way of Allah and [from] al-Masjid al-Haram, which We made for the people - equal are the resident therein and one from outside; and [also] whoever intends [a deed] therein of deviation [in religion] or wrongdoing - We will make him taste of a painful punishment. [Al-Hajj: 25]

Masjid Al-Haraam is also the place from where the Prophet was taken for Israa.
Exalted is He who took His Servant by night from al-Masjid al-Haram to al-Masjid al- Aqsa, whose surroundings We have blessed, to show him of Our signs. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Seeing. [Al-Isra': 1]

A single prayer inside Masjid Al-Haraam has the reward of 100,000 prayers anywhere else.

It was narrated from Jabir that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:
One prayer in my mosque is better than one thousand prayers elsewhere, except the Sacred Mosque, and one prayer in the Sacred Mosque is better than one hundred thousand prayers elsewhere.” [Ibn Majah]

    The Ka'bah

    kabah01 1 - Historical Places in Makkah Al-Mukarramah

    Allah says
Allah has made the Ka'bah, the Sacred House, standing for the people and [has sanctified] the sacred months and the sacrificial animals and the garlands [by which they are identified]. That is so you may know that Allah knows what is in the heavens and what is in the earth and that Allah is Knowing of all things. [Al-Ma'idah: 97]

Indeed, the first House [of worship] established for mankind was that at Makkah - blessed and a guidance for the worlds. [Aal-'Imran: 96]

And [mention, O Muhammad], when We designated for Abraham the site of the House, [saying], "Do not associate anything with Me and purify My House for those who perform Tawaf and those who stand [in prayer] and those who bow and prostrate. [Al-Hajj: 26]

Place of birth of prophet Muhammad

Ibn Sa‘d reported that Muhammad’s mother said: “When he was born, there was a light that issued out of my pudendum and lit the palaces of Syria.” Ahmad reported on the authority of ‘Arbadh bin Sariya something similar to this.

It was but controversially reported that significant precursors accompanied his birth: fourteen galleries of Kisra’s palace cracked and rolled down, the Magians’ sacred fire died down and some churches on Lake Sawa sank down and collapsed.

His mother immediately sent someone to inform his grandfather ‘Abdul-Muttalib of the happy event. Happily he came to her, carried him to Al-Ka‘bah, prayed to Allâh and thanked Him. ‘Abdul-Muttalib called the baby Muhammad, a name not then common among the Arabs. He circumcised him on his seventh day as was the custom of the Arabs.

The first woman who suckled him after his mother was Thuyebah, the concubine of Abu Lahab, with her son, Masrouh. She had suckled Hamzah bin ‘Abdul-Muttalib before and later Abu Salamah bin ‘Abd Al-Asad Al-Makhzumi.
According to http://makkawi.com/Articles/Show.aspx?ID=1153, this was the place where AbdulMuttalib, the grandfather of the Prophet used to live and it belonged to his father Hisham bin 'Abdmunaf. After the death of AbdulMuttalib, it was inherited by his son Abdullah bin AbdulMuttalib, who was the father of the prophet.

During the reign of Abbasid khalifah Al-Mahdi, a female slave of the khalifah purchased the place and built a Masjid on it.

    House of Haleema Sa'diya

According to some sources, the location is https://goo.gl/maps/iDr5GRKgPSU2

And according to some other sources, the location is https://goo.gl/maps/PWnAPfneHp82

There are a few small marked areas like these at this place but we cannot say for sure which one was exactly the house of Haleemah .

The Prophet (Peace be upon him) was later entrusted to Haleemah bint Abi Dhuaib from Bani Sa‘d bin Bakr. Her husband was Al-Harith bin ‘Abdul ‘Uzza called Abi Kabshah, from the same tribe.

Muhammad(Peace be upon him) had several foster brothers and sisters, ‘Abdullah bin Al-Harith, Aneesah bint Al-Harith, Hudhafah or Judhamah bint Al-Harith (known as Ash-Shayma’), and she used to nurse the Prophet (Peace be upon him) and Abu Sufyan bin Al-Harith bin ‘Abdul-Muttalib, the Prophet’s cousin. Hamzah bin ‘Abdul-Muttalib, the Prophet’s uncle, was suckled by the same two wet nurses, Thuyeba and Haleemah As-Sa‘diyah, who suckled the Prophet (Peace be upon him).

Traditions delightfully relate how Haleemah and the whole of her household were favoured by successive strokes of good fortune while the baby Muhammad (Peace be upon him) lived under her care. Ibn Ishaq states that Haleemah narrated that she along with her husband and a suckling babe, set out from her village in the company of some women of her clan in quest of children to suckle. She said:

It was a year of drought and famine and we had nothing to eat. I rode on a brown she-ass. We also had with us an old she-camel. By Allâh we could not get even a drop of milk. We could not have a wink of sleep during the night for the child kept crying on account of hunger. There was not enough milk in my breast and even the she-camel had nothing to feed him. We used to constantly pray for rain and immediate relief. At length we reached Makkah looking for children to suckle. Not even a single woman amongst us accepted the Messenger of Allâh (Peace be upon him) offered to her. As soon as they were told that he was an orphan, they refused him. We had fixed our eyes on the reward that we would get from the child’s father. An orphan! What are his grandfather and mother likely to do? So we spurned him because of that. Every woman who came with me got a suckling and when we were about to depart, I said to my husband: “By Allâh, I do not like to go back along with the other women without any baby. I should go to that orphan and I must take him.” He said, “There is no harm in doing so and perhaps Allâh might bless us through him.” So I went and took him because there was simply no other alternative left for me but to take him. When I lifted him in my arms and returned to my place I put him on my breast and to my great surprise, I found enough milk in it. He drank to his heart’s content, and so did his foster brother and then both of them went to sleep although my baby had not been able to sleep the previous night. My husband then went to the she-camel to milk it and, to his astonishment, he found plenty of milk in it. He milked it and we drank to our fill, and enjoyed a sound sleep during the night. The next morning, my husband said: “By Allâh Haleemah, you must understand that you have been able to get a blessed child.” And I replied: “By the grace of Allâh, I hope so.”

The tradition is explicit on the point that Haleemah’s return journey and her subsequent life, as long as the Prophet (Peace be upon him)stayed with her, was encircled with a halo of good fortune. The donkey that she rode when she came to Makkah was lean and almost foundered; it recovered speed much to the amazement of Haleemah’s fellow travellers. By the time they reached the encampments in the country of the clan of Sa‘d, they found the scales of fortune turned in their favour. The barren land sprouted forth luxuriant grass and beasts came back to them satisfied and full of milk. Muhammad (Peace be upon him) stayed with Haleemah for two years until he was weaned as Haleemah said:

We then took him back to his mother requesting her earnestly to have him stay with us and benefit by the good fortune and blessings he had brought us. We persisted in our request which we substantiated by our anxiety over the child catching a certain infection peculiar to Makkah. At last, we were granted our wish and the Prophet (Peace be upon him) stayed with us until he was four or five years of age.

When, as related by Anas in Sahih Muslim, Gabriel came down and ripped his chest open and took out the heart. He then extracted a blood-clot out of it and said: “That was the part of Satan in thee.” And then he washed it with the water of Zamzam in a gold basin. After that the heart was joined together and restored to its place. The boys and playmates came running to his mother, i.e. his nurse, and said: “Verily, Muhammad (Peace be upon him) has been murdered.” They all rushed towards him and found him all right only his face was white.

After this event, Haleemah was worried about the boy and returned him to his mother with whom he stayed until he was six.

Re: Historical Places in Makkah Al-Mukarramah

Following is a post by a brother living in Jeddah who has traveled and explored several historical places in KSA.
    https://groups.google.com/forum/#!to...wi/2TvstYytj5Y

Rasoolullah Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam spent his years of childhood at the village of Haleemah Sa’adiyyah Radi Allaho Anha, the area famous as Banu Sa’ad.
Majority of people know the location of Banu Sa’ad as the village of Shohata; GPS tags on the map as :

    https://goo.gl/maps/VCfF24GkGFy

But as per the research of D. Abdullah Thumaali, correct location of Banu Sa’ad is the last edge of Autaas; mentioned in The book “Maghaazi” by Waqidi as Zanab Autaas ~

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4RLG2tBrL4I

Zanab ~ ذنب in Arabic means the tail, i.e. the last portion. Autaas starts after few kilometers of Zaat-e-Irq in the east (Meeqaat for pilgrims coming from Iraq); and its last edge is the area where Zubaidah built a Birkah (water reservoir) for pilgrims (a picture attached). And the location on map is:

Reference from The book “Maghaazi” by Waqidi is mentioned below :

We wrote earlier that there is a conflict for location of Banu Sa’ad, Shohata where most of the public goes is

    21.000667, 40.856972
And tags for Zanab Autaas are

    22.056722, 40.615472
Many Sahaabah have traveled from Autaas, it is situated on the old caravaan route going to Iraq (Darb-e-Zubaidah also crossed Autaas), this area has such a rich history & apart from all the events which were held at Autaas, its last edge is the native village of Haleemah Sa’adiyyah Radi Allaho Anha.
After Ghazwat Hunain, Sariyyah of Abu Aamir Ash’ari Radi Allaho Anh was sent to Autaas for chasing the enemy.

On 14th September 2016, we arranged a journey to Autaas & we entered from west to east crossing Meeqat of Zaat-e-Irq, Autaas is a patch of 15 km width, there are small pebbles carpeted on the sands & the least plants grow on those pebbles, a vast & empty Wadi which has no mountains inside, and then after 15 km (all of a sudden), the landscape changes with thick forest of wild desert trees & this area is Zanab Autaas.

Journey to Autaas can’t be arranged by small cars, 4x4 vehicles are needed & it is necessary to go as a caravaan, a group of 3 vehicles at least.

Some videos of our journey :

    Pre-Islamic cemetery (Al-Shubaika cemetery)

    Location: https://www.google.com/maps/place/Al....8213323?hl=en

This is the cemetery where the Arabs used to bury their new-born daughters before the advent of Islam. The birth of a girl was considered as extremely humiliating for them.

Allah says about them in the Qur'an,

And when one of them is informed of [the birth of] a female, his face becomes dark, and he suppresses grief.
He hides himself from the people because of the ill of which he has been informed. Should he keep it in humiliation or bury it in the ground? Unquestionably, evil is what they decide.

Later on, a few Sahabah were also buried inside this cemetery, including Sumayyah , the first martyr in Islam.

    House of Khadeejah

    Location: https://www.google.com/maps/place/21....8279197?hl=en

The house of Umm Al-Mu'mineen, Khadijah was located in the green shaded area shown below. The Prophet married her when he was 25 years of age. She passed away 3 years before the Hijrah. The Prophet did not marry anyone else as long as she was alive.

    CAnBzOAW8AA yEp 1 - Historical Places in Makkah Al-Mukarramah

After her death, the Prophet used to send gifts to her friends in her remembrance.

'Aishah (May Allah be pleased with her) reported:
I never felt jealous of any of the wives of the Prophet (ﷺ) as much as I did of Khadijah (May Allah be pleased with her), although I have never seen her, but the Prophet (ﷺ) used to mention her very often. Whenever he slaughtered a sheep, he would cut it into pieces and send them to the women friends of Khadijah (May Allah be pleased with her). When I sometimes said to him: "You treat Khadijah in such a way as if there is no woman on earth except her". He (ﷺ) would say, "Khadijah was such and such (commending her and speaking well of her), and I had children from her". [Bukhari and Muslim]

    House of Abu Bakr As-Siddeeq

house of abu bakr ra 1 - Historical Places in Makkah Al-Mukarramah

This is the approximate place where the house of Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) was located in Makkah and from where Hijrah to Madinah commenced. It is in the Makkah Towers Hotel block, where a masjid (Masjid Abu Bakr) has been built on the 4th floor.

MasjidAbuBakrsign 1 - Historical Places in Makkah Al-Mukarramah

    Source: https://www.islamiclandmarks.com/mak...of-abu-bakr-ra

Abu Bakr As-Siddeeq was the first man to accept Islam at the hands of Rasulullah . He was the most beloved friend of Rasulullah .

'Abdullah reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying:

If I were to choose as my bosom friend I would have chosen the son of Abu Quhafa (Abu Bakr) as my bosom friend. [Muslim]

He was the one whom Allah had chosen to accompany the prophet during the migration to Madinah. And he was the one whom Rasulullah had chosen to lead the prayers during his last days of life, which indicated that he will be the successor of the prophet .

Aishah [raadi Allahu ‘anha] narrated, “The Messenger of Allah [salallahu alayhi wa sallam] used to visit the house of Abu Bakr [raadi Allahu ‘anhu] daily twice- once in the morning and once in the evening- regularly, without any break. on the day when the Messenger of Allah was permitted by Allah to migrate from Mecca, he came at noon. At such an hour he never visited us. When Abu Bakr saw him he said, ‘The Messenger of Allah has come here at this time due to a certain very urgent need.’ When he entered the house, Abu Bakr moved a little to give him the place to sit on the cot. None, except me and my sister Asmaa were present at that time over there. The Messenger of Allah asked, ‘Ask these persons present here to go out for a while.’ Abu Bakr said, ‘These are my two daughters. May my parents be sacrificed for you, what is the matter?’ He said, ‘Allah has permitted me to leave [this place i.e. Mecca] and migrate.’

Hearing that Abu Bakr asked, ‘What about my company [with you]?’ He said, ‘The company as well has been allowed’. By Allah, I didn’t know before that time that people also weep out of joy. I realised that only when I saw Abu Bakr weeping [out of joy].

Then he requested, ‘O Prophet of Allah, these are the two she-camels who have been prepared only for this purpose.’ Afterwards, they hired Abdullah ibn Arqad, a man belonging to Bani Du’il ibn Bakr tribe, who was an idolater, to show the way [to Madinah]. Abu Bakr gave him the two she-camels with the promise that he will tend them until the time they called him to accompany them.’

Re: Historical Places in Makkah Al-Mukarramah

    Dar Al-Arqam

daarul arqam 1 - Historical Places in Makkah Al-Mukarramah

This area, at the foot of Mount Safa was the approximate area where Daarul Arqam (The house of Arqam) was located. It was here in the initial period of Islam that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be on him) secretly preached Islam.

HistoricphotooftheDarulArqamarea 1 - Historical Places in Makkah Al-Mukarramah
    Historic photo of Dar Al-Arqam

This house belonged to a Sahabi named Arqam bin Abu Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him). For some time after the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be on him) proclaimed his Prophethood, this house was the secret centre of propagation. It was here that the Muslims gathered to perform salat and to learn about Islam. As it was a short walk away from the Ka’bah and its bustling crowds, the pagans who lived nearby did not take notice of the many people who used to gather here.

Daarul Arqam was also known as Daarul Khaizaraan. It was here that the following verse from Surah al-Anfal was revealed: “O Prophet, Allah is sufficient for you, and for those who follow you among the believers.” [8:64]

When Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) wanted to take his Shahadah (declaration of the faith of Islam) he asked Khabbab (may Allah be pleased with him) where he would find the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be on him). Upon hearing of his desire to accept Islam, Khabbab (may Allah be pleased with him) exclaimed,“Umar, I have hope that Allah hath chosen thee through the prayers of His Prophet, whom yesterday I heard pray: ‘O Allah, strengthen Islam with Abu Hakam (Abu Jahal) the son of Hisham or with Umar the son of Khattab!”. “O Khabbab,” said Umar, “where will Muhammad now be, that I may go to him and enter Islam?” Khabbab (may Allah be pleased with him) told him that he was at the house of Arqam near the Safa Gate with many of his companions.

Umar went to Safa, knocked at the door of the house, and said who he was. The Sahabah had been warned that he was coming but they were struck by the subdued tone of his voice. One of the companions went to the door and looked through a chink and came back in some dismay. “O Messenger of Allah” he said, “it is indeed Umar and he is girt with his sword”. “Let him come in,” said Hamza (may Allah be pleased with him). “if he has come with good intent, we will give him a wealth of good; and if his intent be evil, we will slay him with his own sword.” The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be on him) agreed that he should be admitted and, advancing to meet him, he seized him by the belt and pulled him into the middle of the room saying, “What has brought thee here, O son of Khattab? I cannot see thee desisting until Allah sent down some calamities upon thee”. “O Messenger of Allah,” said Umar, “I have come to thee that I may declare my faith in Allah, and in his Messenger and in what he has brought from Allah”. “Allahu-Akbar!,” said the Prophet, in such a way that every man and woman in the house knew that Umar had entered Islam; and they all rejoiced.
Because the valour and courage of Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was acknowledged by all, it was after his conversion to Islam that the Muslims started performing salah in the open and Islam was propagated in public.
