I would like to start this new thread about learning Malay as it is among the language of muslim in south east asia...many people from Cambodia,Thailand,Malaysia,Brunei,Indonesia,and Phillipines using this language as the mediator of the learning of Islamic knowledge and the interpretation of Quran : )

Malay is originated from the language of an Austronesian tribe of Sumatera in Indonesian territory now adays...but it is also spoken in Tanah Melayu or the Malay Land (Malaysian Peninsula), it is in Malaysia territory...Malay was spreaded long time ago around South East Asia during the conquest of Malay-Buddhist kingdom from Palembang, Sumatera which is known as Srivijaya or Sribhoja in 7th century AD...Malay at this time were written in Pallava script or South Indian Brahmin script and becoming the language of Buddhism knowledge together with Sanskrit particularly for Tantrayana and Mahayana sect. The language is peppered with Sanskrit phrases and words beside its native vocabulary. At this stage Malay is known as Old-Malay.
During 11th century-13th century, Islam being the religion of Muslim merchants of Middle East who came here for trades accepted by several Malay-Speaker Kingdoms.Some Muslim Historians in South East Asian believe that Islam reaches this area earlier than the stated time...Malay was also used as the medium of communication by traders from around the world in South East Asia.There are also Da'ie from Middle East whether sent by Sharif of Makkah or individually with the sacred intention to help the people in this area with Islamic Knowledge.The scholars from Arabia and Farsi created the new script based from Arabic script for Malay in the plan to Islamisize it.The script is known as Jawi with some addition in the term of Malay phonology...the alphabets being added is known as Cha, Pa, Nya,and Ga. Many Arabic and Persian loanwords were accepted in Malay. Malay with the influence of Islam is identified as Classical Malay. Classical Malay is still used today in Cambodia, Southern Thailand, Brunei and Malaysia for Islamic knowledge purpose. Malay is considered by the native of these countries as the language of Islam beside Arabic.
Modern Malay which is currently used by Malaysian, Bruneian, and Singaporean is known as bahasa Melayu and using Roman script. In Indonesia it is called bahasa Indonesia with the purpose of nationalism and influenced by Dutch and regional dialect such as Javanese and Batavian.
It is easy to learn Modern Malay as the system of writing is similar to English with some slight change in pronunciation.
For Classical Malay, the writing sometimes differ according to how Arabic influence the community who speak it. Anyway I wish brothers and sisters in Islam and friends around the world enjoy the explanation and gain new knowledge.
