Morally Oblivious

By early 2024, it became more and more clear that famine was a very real threat in Gaza. By mid-February 2024, nearly all homes, schools, hospitals, and places of worship in the Strip were damaged or destroyed. Nearly the entire population of Gaza was displaced. Funding to UNRWA, the main agency providing relief to Palestinian refugees, was cut off based on a lie by Israel. To top it off, humanitarian aid was being blocked from entering Gaza, in some cases by raving Israeli settlers and in some cases by the Israeli government itself.

While Palestinians starved to death, IDF soldiers expressed some culinary creativity by stealing ingredients from Palestinian homes and making meals that could be considered lavish during wartime. Genocide with a side of war crimes, anyone? Maybe wash it down with a warm cup of torture to soothe the soul. These poor soldiers have to eat, after all. Being away from their warm, cozy homes and having the burden of slaughtering women and children really works up an appetite.

This isn’t even one of those dumb crimes posted by the perpetrators on TikTok. This was shared in a Hebrew-language article in the popular Israeli newspaper Haaretz. Apparently it was supposed to be a feel-good story. But what’s good about massacring people, driving them from their homes, then pilfering their belongings?







The article even stated: “It is important to clarify that these are abandoned houses, some of them destroyed or destined for demolition, and this is the way the IDF fights in Gaza.” Hmm. I wonder why those homes are abandoned, and how they came to be destroyed. Well, no time to ponder on that. My stomach’s grumbling.

Could one be any more tone deaf? Are these war criminals not the same people whose ancestors suffered similar atrocities at the hands of Nazis in Germany? Can you imagine being so morally oblivious that this all seems okay? What a world we live in.
