    Dyeing the hair black

    Report bad ads?

Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds; and blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon all his Family and Companions.

It is lawful to color one's hair. This rule is common for both males and females. It is lawful to use all kinds of Henna of dyeing or painting as long as the black color is avoided. The black color is dislikable because the Prophet said: "Change the color of grey hair but avoid the black". Ahmad from Anas. Another Hadith about the hair of Abu Bakr's father which was white, reads: "Change this (its colour) but avoid black". [Muslim, al-Nasai, Abu Dawood and Ibn Majah]. Some scholars even forbid coloring white hair with black colors and this is a very appropriate opinion. Anyway, the rule of coloring the hair with black color is at least that it is dislikable and this is enough to make the Muslim avoid this.

    Allah knows best.

    Re: Dyeing the hair black

The meaning of this hadith is that those people who've gone grey due to old age shouldn't dye their hair black. This is because it falls under deception.

I don't see why a young person going prematurely grey cannot dye their hair black, if it is orginally that colour. You can't exactly deceive someone if you are young and black have hair anyway.

^I remember reading it on a similar thread some time ago. I can't say for sure that the Prophet himself said it but it was one of the reasons given.

    Re: Dyeing the hair black

    JazakAllah khair amirah sis..

I disagree with this though (2nd link)
Dyeing the hair black is not allowed, whether the hair was red or white. The scholars have stated that the reason why it is not allowed to dye the hair black is because of the deception involved, as it makes a person appear to be something he is not, especially since a person’s age may be known from the colour of his hair, whether it is black or white or a mixture of the two. So dyeing the hair black makes him look young when he may be middle aged or an old man.
A middle-aged person who dyes their hair black will NOT look younger. Skin tone pales as we age and the contrast between black hair and pale wrinkly skin will look unnatural and still show the age. It is the more softer colours (shades of brown) that will make the person look younger than they really are.

    Re: Dyeing the hair black

There are various reasons/arguments presented by scholars as to why using black color to dye ones hair(if it becomes grey due to old age) is haraam but they all agree that it IS haraam. The Prophet Muhammad (Blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said:
"At the last period of This Life some people will dye their hair black like a pigeon, craw, they will not find the smell of Paradise."
[Narrated by Ahmad and Abu Dawood ]

    Re: Dyeing the hair black

Black might've been prohibited in the Prophet's (PBUH) times as there probably weren't others colours except that and henna to die the hair with. Today we know that older people look younger by dying their hair in more lighter shades, not black.

blond tips? haram or not.. they look awful!

I've come to the conclusion that if black hair dye was forbidden by the Prophet, due to the fact that it makes an old person look younger, then dying your hair any colour that will make you look younger is forbidden too. The emphasis isn't on the hair colour alone but more importantly on the prohibition of concealing one's age.

Imam Al-Bukhari who was a rock in terms of his exceptional memory. He was also the world leader in the science of Hadith. He is followed by Imam Muslim . There are no weak Hadith in their collections by the grace of Allah. Thus the scholars examined every narration that reached them until the Sunnah of the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam) became clear to all. You can avoid weak and spurious Ahadith by reading only the collections of Al-Bukhari and Muslim . You can also read the books of erudite and sagacious past and contemporary scholars, such as Riyaadus-Saaliheen, by An-Nawawi and the translated books of Sheikh Al-Albaani.

    Re: Dyeing the hair black

If a man is advanced in age with white hair and a beard, it would hardly be appropriate for him to dye his hair black. On the day of the conquest of Makkah, Abu Bakr brought his aged father, Abu Quhafah, carrying him until he had him seated in front of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). On seeing Abu Quhafah's snow-white hair, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, 'Change this, but avoid black.' (Fath Al-Bari)

In contrast, if a man is not of such advanced age or feebleness as that of Abu Quhafah, there is no harm in his using black dye. In this regard, Az-Zuhri said, 'We dyed our hair black when the face looked young, but discarded it when the face became wrinkled and the teeth decayed.' (Reported by Ibn Abu `Asim in the book on 'Dyeing the Hair')

Some of the early Muslims, including some Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) such as Sa`d ibn Abi Waqqas, `Uqbah ibn `Amr, Al-Hassan, Al-Hussayn, Jareer, and others permitted the use of black dye. Some scholars do not consider the use of black dye as permissible except during time of war, with possibility of making the enemy thrown off balance by seeing all Muslim soldiers in their blossoming youth.

Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated, 'The best thing with which to dye gray hair is Henna and Katm.' (Mentioned in Fath Al-Bari) Henna makes the hair red, while Katm, a plant from Yemen, colors it black, tinged with red. Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) says, 'Abu Bakr dyed his hair with Henna and Katm, and `Umar dyed it with Henna only.'"

    Re: Dyeing the hair black

    Question
My question is not regarding `Eid really. My husband wants me to dye my hair for `Eid (I wear Hijab). I know you can do this but I wanted to know whether you should use permanent dye or other, there are so many different types on the market, also whether women can use black dye. I have tried Henna knowing that this is better, but it does not work on my hair

    Answer
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

A woman asked `Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) about beautifying herself for her husband. `Aishah replied by saying: "If you were to take out your eyes just to please your husband, do it!" This is a figure of speech and an exaggeration that a woman should try her best to please her husband as long as she is not doing something which Allah has forbidden.

You are allowed to dye your hair, whether permanent or short.

As for black colour, it is controversial but it is allowed according to some scholars provided that it is not done to trick or deceive others. Other scholars forbid using the black colour based on the hadith where the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said about Quhafa when he came to him with white hair, "Dye his hair and avoid the black." But the scholars of the first opinion interpreted the hadith to refer to those who try to deceive people about his age.

Therefore, I tend to hold it permissible that you are allowed to dye your hair black to please your husband.

    Re: Dyeing the hair black

    Question:
Is it permissible for a Muslim to dye his hair. Is the ruling different for men and women? Does it matter what color the dye is?

Answered by the Fatwa Department Research Committee - chaired by Sheikh `Abd al-Wahhâb al-Turayrî

Here are our fatwâs about dyeing the hair. Their rulings apply to both men and women:

Dyeing the hair other than black:

    Answered by:
Sheikh `Abd al-Rahmân al-`Ajlân, lecturer at the grand Mosque in Mecca

Men and women are allowed to change the color of their hair with any hair coloring besides black. They may get rid of the gray in their hair with such substances as henna or saffron.

    Dyeing the hair black:

    Answered by:
Sheikh Dr. `Abd al-Rahmân F. al-Jar`î, professor at King Khâlid University, Abhâ

In my opinion, the best opinion regarding dyeing the hair or the beard black is that it is merely disliked, since the hadîth which prohibit it are not authentic in their lines of transmission. One of the most important of these hadîth is the one related by Jâbir b. `Abd Allah that Abu Quhâfah arrived after the conquest of Mecca with his beard completely white. Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Dye it, but avoid using black coloring” [Sahîh Muslim (2101)]. However, the phrase “avoid usling black coloring” is not authentic, as some scholars have cited.

The second hadîth on this matter was related by Ibn `Abbâs that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “There will be some people at the end of time who will dye their hair as black as crows and they will not smell the scent of Paradise." [Musnad Ahmad (1/273)] This hadîth is weak, because it is line of transmission is disputed.

Therefore, the best opinion is that dyeing the hair black is disliked, since this takes into account the command of avoiding black found in the hadîth and also the opinions of some prominent Companions like al-Hasan , al-Husayan , `Uthman , Sa`id b. Abi Waqqâs, Jarîr b. `Abd Allah, `Amr b. al-`Âs and many of the successors, as cited by Ibn Jarîr and Ibn al-Qayyim .

Ibn al-Qayyim writes in Tahdhîb al-Sunnan (6/10): “Dyeing with black was disliked by group of scholars, and this is the correct position on the matter.”

    And Allah knows best.
