Is watching science fiction movies haram?
for instance, in the modern day installment of the Planet of the Apes trilogy, a new drug is tested on lab apes, to see if it cures brain illness, however, the disease spreads and nearly wipes out mankind, while the apes evolve by using the new drug to increase their intelligence and even allow them to communicate through language.....they are led by an ape who was once a human's pet, and the apes eventually rebel against human rule and struggle for control of the planet.

is this haram because it challenges the Islamic belief in intelligent design and humans being a vicegerent of Allah on Earth? or is it just harmless fun and a story?

Re: Is watching sci-fi movies haram?

As far as i know there is nothing haram about it. However, if you THINK that what is being propagated as that is "possible" and thus making evolution-theory sort of a fact, that is defiantly a no-go.

I also have watched those movies, but i have found a deeper meaning. Like i already said "propagated", this is the brainwashing that now a days happens. As an ex-atheist myself, through believe i can alhamduillilah crush the whole evolution-theory and also through logic, rationality and reason i can alhamdulillah crush this theory. Many of the movies keep us busy. I mean think with me for a second, what has happened to those Discovery channel programs where they show you the wild and nature? Now a days they are talking about selling used cars and how to make artificial stuff. While watching documentaries about nature that can make you ponder about the ayaat (signs) of Allah(swt) is indeed way more beneficial, if you somehow still want to watch something on the tv.

Again, do not mistake what i have said to movies being "haram", as i am in no position to say such a thing. It only has less benefit if you ask me.

Re: Is watching sci-fi movies haram?

i thought it was a pretty good film actually.. a really..really.. good remake rather than a scene for scene remake..

i found myself rooting for the apes.. be they dispised..

    it was rather ironic.

    lovely character development.

...but you know, we all watch the same thing.. coming to different conclusions.

...each to his own i suppose.

i prefer hard work, i cant be convinced otherwise.

If you think like that, it's mean you are failed to understand the message behind the story.

Human indeed, are destined to be intelligent creature on earth who have superiority. But how if human are not the only intelligent creature on earth, and have no superiority?. This is the message behind the story. And if you understand this message, In Shaa Allah, you would treat animal better.

Matrix was one of my favorites although it had a lot of action in it. The concept makes it good. I have good Korean movies..if you are up to quality on high level. If not..keep on watching hollywood .

Frankly, I think everyone should experience more good science fiction, regardless of their religion. Abstract thinking for the win.

Re: Is watching sci-fi movies haram?

I admit I loved reading and watching science fiction, now it is much less because I simply don't have the time to fit it in alongside studying and other things.

In my opinion, I think we should steer clear of anything which is too 'unIslamic' or inappropriate. And it's good to keep in mind most sci-fi is fiction, just a little too improbable to actually be that realistic, lol.

Back when I was a bit of a film buff, I just loved War of the Worlds and Artificial Intelligence - such underrated films IMO.

I think science fiction movies are even better as a Muslim to watch, regarding desires. For example if we take Avatar (2009). With nature and floating islands..this makes me disattach from the current world and what it offers. I then do not desire cars, houses, money or whatever this dunya offers. As those floating islands..are NOT in the reach of this dunya. This dunya becomes a joke hahahah compared to those nature seen on that planet Avatar movie . Or riding on those dragon creatures..or just flying by yourself like Dragon Ball Z XD

Re: Is watching sci-fi movies haram?

I usually watch animes which has Sci-fi things.

    I don't really watch movies.

Like transformers, or some intelligent genius, the only thing I dislike about those "intelligent genial maniacs" are that they are usually portrayed in a shirky way. Maybe not, but sometimes they are portrayed llike that.

I like characters who are very humble, yet very rational, logical, and has strong will.

I think I went off a tangent. sry. Say.

Those who challenge Islamic beliefs, Allah put a challenge to write a book like The Qur'aan (and even if all of mankind and Jinnkind got together to do this, they'd never be able to)

Which proves that it is from Allah.

    Allahu alam.

    yeah, excellent point really..

most subject matter has aspects of associating things with allah swt..

you have to be very careful in your understanding of such things..

but as it is.. there are only so many stories to tell..

before we hit sequels and remakes.

    strange days.

to be upset at the status quo means nothing if we only aspire to trade places...

    probably.

Well, except that I dislike the kufr elements in it. I like how Luffy keeps on going even when the whole world and the government which is seen as "righteous" is against him.

he lost his brother. can't wait to see his rage on the one who caused his death.

But tbh, I didn't think of that anime, or any anime really. But I guess it fits the description of "humble yet strong willed, etc."

=_= ...should be good, the blade runner remake is also.. probably going to be epic.

Officer K (Ryan Gosling), a new blade runner for the Los Angeles Police Department, unearths a long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge what's left of society into chaos. His discovery leads him on a quest to find Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), a former blade runner who's been missing for 30 years.
