Providing TV , internet for a house for rent is allowed ?

    Report bad ads?

    Brothers & sisters

Normally I answer to questions like this but am myself in a tight corner so am asking this to the knowledgeable here since the house for rent which is my ONLY or main income way .

The people who want to rent always asks us to provide a TV & a cable connection and an internet line. These we have been avoiding always Alhamdulilah but Providing those to tenants with a conditional terms not to watch haram material , will it be ok ??. though i can tell the cable operator to allow only the sports , news, discovery natural life etc and cut all movies ( i just saw scifi movie thread here )

Jazakallah for your views, May Allah lead us to the right & easy path. ameen

man you would probably turn up one day and the place had been turned into an internet cafe..

people have a habit of doing that.

if it says bills included on your agreement you can do anything.. bills included rental prices are probably a thing.

tvs are cheap anyway.. although if they let you keep it when they move its because you took a deposit greater than its value.

i wouldnt get them a cable connection though.. o_o ..freeview boxes are cheap anyway.

    Hiya,

No, you "don't" have to. I've never heard of people demanding a TV. Which country are you in? I know some people may want a couch or a fridge but a TV is not exactly essential is it?

A lot of properties that are rented out are not furnished and do not have these items. Why on earth would you want to provide them with a TV? They could pinch it!

Say you were intending on charging them £500/$500 a month, drop the price a bit and make it clear there will be no TV, say for example £475/$475. You might lost a bit of income but so what. You won't be providing them with a TV.

Re: Providing TV , internet for a house for rent is allowed ?

A rented house is NOTHING more than a shelter. You however do provide them with the necessary stuff for them to be able to "attach" these goods. For example, to have cable connection, you must have a cable directly to the house. The rest is up to them to contact a company that delivers the connection it self. They pay directly to the company itself.

Also with the tv. Some tv's will use more electricity than other tv's. The electricity bill will be theirs to pay. Or if they would leave and somebody else would come and bring their own tv. As yours is too old. Or if nobody rents it from you, you still have to pay the internet connection, while nobody is using it.

I for example am also renting my apartment, however i do not have a cable(tv) connection. As i find tv in general just brainwashing. However i do have a tv and i watch youtube videos and stuff on the tv using a Google Chromecast.

Don't worry about the whole haram thing. It is up to you how you want to use something. Internet has A LOT of beneficial things as we are talking with each other through it. However, we can also use it for haram purposes. A kitchen knife i can use to cut meat, but i can also kill somebody with it.

not literally but you get the idea.

Sound like you rent out your house on daily or weekly basis for tourists (In Phuket, isn't that?). With this condition is normal if the tenant ask for TV and internet connection because those tourists don't bring TV from their own home.

Different than if you rent out your house for family on yearly basis.

I rent out my house on yearly basis. The condition was unfurnished and without internet connection (that's new house). The tenant is a family with two little children. They brought their own furniture and household goods, including TV. After few days they told me they wanted to install internet connection, and I allowed them.I allowed them because, first, I already planned to install internet connection in that house. Second, internet is neutral. It can be used for positive things or negative things, depend on user.

How if they use that internet for something wrong like watching porn?. Hmm ..., I didn't want to suudzon (having prejudice) toward them, especially because I know them as good family. How if I disallowed them to install fixed line internet connection?. I am sure they would use mobile modem.

Brother, if the case indeed is for the use for tourists, then it is more like a hotel. As people don't plan to bring their own stuff. A tv with a connection is "normal" even a internet connection now a days. Off course, about the tv channels. I would advice you to buy a satellite dish and program it to have all kind of channels worldwide..with the exception of pornographic channels. There are ways to even get many channels for free..using ..*kuch* ..*kuch*..cannot say it, is illegal. But it is possible. Sheikh google doesn't abide by laws he will for sure tell you the knowledge about it :P. I do not want to bring Islamic board forum in to trouble for it.

I was giving it out for long term as well but you have attractive returns on for short term. But now since am spending much time in Phuket am thinking to rent it out for short term and all those amenities attract customers and they ask about it .

I am just worried about the haram use of our instruments . But yes we cant deny that its like a knife can be used in good or even bad. But the most probable use and the type of customers who come will make us decide i think, like families will not have much issues etc . But thats not very easy to decide as well.

May Allah make our earnings Halal and save from haram.

Brother, you cannot stop somebody doing haram. In the case of internet, you give them internet. What they do with it, is up to them, but give them a CLEAR instruction of you not being responsible for their actions and if authorities might ask for necessary information regarding illegal practices using the internet you have at that house, you hand those information over. So they KNOW and don't act all innocent. Make this clear in the contract.

What i know through media and documentaries many men go to Thailand for prostitution, but still you cannot say your intention is for them to use for example your house for such practices. Your intention is clear, but if i were you try to prioritize families above others if possible.

Untill now not on this issue on giving these to others in rent.

But One Mufti to whom i used to listen gave me different opinion on zakat on property than a opinion which was given by an Aalim 3 decades ago , makes me think thrice to ask him again.

But Inshallah i would be asking again when i could get contact with him.

But if you have any reliable Mufti (also with academic, world practical knowledge) , kindly do ask bro.

    jazakallah khair
