    sleep problem..

    Report bad ads?

I dont know what to do anymore. Everytime I pick up the Quran and start reading, I feel extremely extremely sleepy.

I've noticed that when I do go the mosque, and stand in jamaat, I feel sleepy when the imam is reciting the Quran.

Its the reason the Quran is sitting on the top of my bookcase untouched for a lil' while now.

I can honestly say that I've tried reading it at different times. For example at fajr time, after maghrib or even after Isha. Every single time the same thing happens.

As a side note, I even have trouble focusing on school work, like whenever I'm in lecture hall, I fall asleep. Its quite troublesome I tell you and I've paid enough with my marks for that.

I've tried it alot of times... so I am looking for alternatives for the problem.

    Jazakallahu khayrun (sp?)

It probably has something to do with your seratonin levels being, shall we say, slightly not normal. I'd advise you to see a doctor, perhaps he/she'll be able to give you a prescription.

How long have you been feeling like this? And have you noticed that this sleepiness comes on with the onset of winter?

oh for a long long time sis.

brother aamirsaab, you sound knowledged so I was wondering if you were into neurology, if you are then maybe you'll be able to asnwer this question, Which part of the brain(or rather organ, tissue or whatever) is responsible to maintaining the sertonin levels?

Since you've posted this I've spent 3-4 hours reading about serotonin and its effects on the body, and I must say I shall be looking into that soon. But right now if you were to answer my question I'd be satisfied.

I have psychology notes on seratonin and we did cover a little of neurology. I'll look them up inshallah tonight (to be honest, it'll take me a while to find since I've got to go through all of my A level stuff ). I'll post my findings inshallah by tonight.

Do you have any problems with getting to sleep at night? Do you get enough sleep then?

Another thing is, do you read the recommended du'as during the day, such as before going to bed, when waking up, before eating, du'as for protection against evil etc.?

    Re: sleep problem..

    Brother muhammad, I do sometimes.

Does iron deficieny have anything to do with this? Because I've had iron deficieny since when I was little. I also have thyroid problem which I eat medications for everyday. Although the iron deficieny is the one that concerns me. I've tried everything for it, I ate two capsules everyday for 2 years and still there was no result of my iron levels going up. Then I've tried getting iron shots (which I must say were most painful) but I ended up getting infection. Now I just gave up on iron. I mean I eat fruits(apples, bananas and I'm pretty much always eating[although I'm not fat]) regardless, the level doesnt increase. My doctor said that an average man has levels from 50-80. I have 5....

Anyways. Thats doesnt bother me that much though. what bothers me is that I know I have very bad memory loss ..I tend to forget lots of things.

I thank allah that I have am smart brain, although this sleep problem really effects it really badly. I tend to fall asleep in the midst of doing any activity. I've tried like 2-3 times drinking coffee to get a sugar rush, but it doesnt seem to work either. I have no idea what to do.

    Re: sleep problem..

As promised, here are my findings. I appologise for the length, but it's as short as I can make it seeing as I have pages on the topic.

I mentioned earlier seratonin levels. I found out that it is infact melatonin. The more melatonin you have in your body, the easier it is to sleep. In your case, you could very well have a melatoning imbalance, however since as you stated it occurs at certain times of the day I will discuss another theory: exogenous zeitgebers - in plain english: an internal biological clocks that controls your sleep pattern.

The temperature is an example of a zeitgeber, the warmer it is the quicker you'll get to sleep (foot note 1). In other words, when you're about to read your namaz/salaat is the temperature generally warmer? Do you yourself feel warmer? If so, turn down the heating.

Another possible reason/ theory is that the light could be affecting your biological clock (foot note 2). In which case you'll have to experiment with exposure to light, again this should reset the biological clock to its norm.

That's pretty much all I can give on this topic. I would recommend seeking advice from a doctor though, especially if this sleep problem has been going on for some time (several months)

    Foot notes/ extra explanations
foot note 1: conversely, a colder temperature is what wakes us up, studies have shown that in the morning, the temp does in fact drop)

foot note 2: Light usually affects our sleep pattern, though it usually offsets the pattern by a few hours per day. In noodles case, it seems only at certain times his biological clock is messing up.

=noodlesoh for a long long time sis.

If you feel fine during the summer, then your probably suffering from something known as SAD (seasonal affective disorder). Symptoms include sleepiness, depression and anxiety etc etc...

The simplest treatment is using a lightbox to increase exposure to light. (Lack of light causes bio-chemical imbalance in the brain.)

But if your feel lethargic all year round then anemia could be the reason. You mentioned that iron supplements aren't helping so really you should ask your doctor to refer you to a specialist. There's a reason why your red blood cell is low despite taking iron supplements and you can only get proper treatment if the cause is diagnosed. Do go and ask your GP for a referal.

I hope it's nothin serious inshaAllah.

I hope not sis. Excessive sleepiness is just as bad as insomnia. Hope the little one isn't causing sleepless nights.

sister daffodil, you certainly wont be burdening anyone, and the last thing you should be doing is moping.

If you do have a problem, discussing it with someone is the best way or it will eat you up from inside. Feel free to discuss it on here or rather create an anonymous account and post it. Why would you rather mope when people are offering you advice or much better solution: help. We all have our problems and you are certainly not alone in them. Its much better to stick as a group and if there is someone closer to you that you can rely on then its much better you talk to him/her.
