How can I learn to speak Arabic?

    Report bad ads?

I really want to learn to speak and understand Arabic. However, I am not in a position to be able to join any classes or be able to pay for it.

Is there any material that can be downloaded or viewed online?

    Jazakallah Khair.

Re: How can I learn to speak Arabic?

If you are just starting, please let me make a suggestion!

Learn the sounds first. Spend way too much time practicing the sounds like ghayn and ayn and qaf and daad and zha and Taa.

Learning language is hard. Learning a language takes a lifetime.

Start learning arabic like you learned your first language. listen to the sounds of a native speaker and practice them until you get them perfect. Then when you're learning grammar and vocabulary, you aren't practicing bad habits like saying azan instead of athan. or zuhr instead of zhur (there is a diff!)

    Jazakallah brother!

I have learnt the Arabic alphabets and I am now learning to read words. I still struggle to pronounce them
I love the language! I used to say azan but not anymore

There's an excellent series of books you can order (3 in total), that have been devised by dr. ...... (can't remember his name right now!). This is taught at the Islamic University of al-Madinah al-Munawarah for speakers of English. It's really good; easy to learn, concise yet thorough. I'll get the name of the author for you bro asap.

    Take Care.

The Quran will straighten out your tongue brother, just keep reading it and you will get reward too! Try and understand what you are reading at the same time, pick up small words etc. Arabic is different to other language in that from one word or verb you get a dozen others, so you have to try and recognise these words dont be afraid and guess sometimes, for example if you today learned the word "Qaala" means He said, then next time when you see "Qawl" you'll think hang on a minute, perhaps this has something to do with speech too? Hope you understand.

Re: How can I learn to speak Arabic?

Salaam, I personally dont think the Madinatul-Munawarrah books are as great as some others, they aren't as clear for total beginners! Just my opinion :S

Theres a brother I came across on line sometime back who teaches Arabic for free via Skype or msn or yahoo etc to brothers.. ill try to find where I saw his ad on! but maybe that'd be a better idea = to search for somebody to teach you fesabilillah a little every week.

You might also find something like www.lisanularab.org useful where u can ask questions and maybe even find someone on there to help you study.

    Fair enough.

This is the book series I was on about. Book one, two and three are labelled v1, v2, v3.

    Ditto.

Courses are good, but your not gonna pick it up as fast than if you hang around with people who speak it. Combination of both I think.

I would love to hang out with people who speak Arabic but I don't know anyone.

I didn't realise Arabic was so hard. Its gonna take me longer than I expected.
