EZ Arabic Practice / Conversation thread (OP)

Those interested in learning Arabic, using the EZ Arabic course can use this thread to practice their arabic. The best way to learn a language is to use it, both in writing and in speaking. if you can't find anyone to talk to, i believe talking online will also help.

in every week's lesson i will be giving practice tips. Use them to practice your arabic and post your sentences here. additionally, use this thread to talk to other members in arabic.

try to learn arabic typing and type in arabic, but at the start if you can't type in arabic, use english transliteration to write what you want to say.

never heard it before. أنا means I. رجل = man. i believe زكر means male. so you can say, أنا رَجلٌ or أنا زكر. not too sure about the second.

    1. How do you search for the five letter past tense verb اِنْكَسَرَ inkasara in a concise Arabic to English dictionary such as al-mawrid al-qareeb?

    2. How do you search for the noun اِسْتَغْفَرَ istaghfara in a complex Arabic to English dictionary such as the Hans Wehr dictionary?

    3. What is the mansoob case and what words make the present tense verb mansoob?

Grade yourself. If you get fewer than 15 marks, revise the lessons and supplements

    Answers:

    A. Define the following words: (1 mark each) (3)
    1. رِحْلَة - tripٌ
    2. اشْرحْ - explain
    3.رَجَعَ - returned

    B. Write the plural of each word. (1 mark each) (4)
    1.كتاب -
    كُتب

    2.سيارة -
    سيّارات

    3.مهندس
    مهَندِسون

    4.مُُدََرِّّسَة
    مُدَرّسات

    C. Translate to Arabic: (2 marks each) (4)
    1. what are you studying? ماذا تدرس
    2. when will be the trip? متى سيكون الرحلة

    D. Answer the following questions: (3 marks each)
    1. To look up the five letter past tense verb انكسر in the concise dictionary, simply look up انكسر . If you don’t find it, then look up the three letter base form of the verb, which is كَسَرَ . in most cases you won’t have to look up the three-letter base form.

    2. To look up the six-letter past tense verb استغفر in a complex dictionary, you need to look up the base form of the verb which may be three-letters or four letters. In this case, the base form of the word is the three letter verb غَفَرَ so that is the word you will look up. Then in the list of the words derived from the base form, search for استغفر .
    3. while normally the present tense verb is in the marfoo case, the present tense verb is changed to the mansoob case with the words known as . in the mansoob case, the present tense verb’s ending changes. If it ends in a damma in the marfoo case, then in the mansoob case, the damma is changed to a fathha. If ends in a nun () then in the mansoob case, the ending nun is omitted. This is te case if it is one of the afaal al khamsa (5 verbs). If the present tense verb is a feminine plural, then it is mabny and its ending doesn’t change. It remains the same in all the cases (marfoo, mansoob, and majzoom.)

    3. Dual noun: it ends in a ya + nun (ين ِ) with a fathha on the letter before the ya. (That is, the ending of the dual noun in the mansoob position has an “ain” sound.) Also, the last nun in the dual noun always has a kasra.

    4. Regular masculine plural: it ends in a ya + nun with a kasra on the letter before the ya. (That is, the ending of the regular masculine noun in the mansoob position has an “een” sound.) and the nun at the end always has a fathha.

    5. Regular feminine plural: it ends in a kasra just like in the majroor case. The regular feminine plural noun never ends in a fathha.

    Answers:

    A. Define the following words: (1 mark each)
    1. وسخ - dirty
    2. مسرور - happy
    3. حقيبة – bag (or handbag)
    4. شاطيء البحر - beach

    B. Translate to Arabic: (2 marks each)
    1. I was late because there was an accident on the way. كُنتُ متأخرا ً (متأخرة) لأن كانت حادثى علي الطريق
    2. I was busy so I didn’t visit you. كنت مشغولا ً ( مشغولة ً ) فلم أزورك
    3. This is the news (that) I heard.هذا الأخبار الذي سمعته
    4. The beautiful cat is sitting under the tall tree. القطة الجميلة جالسةً تحت الشجرةِ الطويلة ِ
    5. The boy and his sister were playing in the garden. كان الولدُ و أخته يلعبان في الحديفة

    C. Answer the following questions: ( 3 marks each)
    1. what is the effect of كان on the subject and predicate of the sentence? Provide detailed answer.
كان has the same effect on the جملة الاسمية as ليس . كان makes the subject (اسم كان ) marfoo and the khabr mansoob. However, the effect of كان on the خبر is visible only when the khabr is a noun. If the khabr is a verb or a preposition, كان doesn’t change the words in the khabr. Instead, the whole khabr is in the nasb position محل نصب.
    2. Talk about adjectives in Arabic.
In Arabic the adjective follows the noun it describes. Also, the adjective has the same grammatical form as the noun it describes. So if the noun is singular, the adjective will also be singular. If the noun is plural, the adjective is also plural. If the noun is plural, the adjective is also plural. If the noun is masculine, the adjective will be in the masculine form and if the noun is feminine, the adjective will be in the feminine form. If the noun contains the proper article ال the adjective contains it, and if the noun doesn’t contain it, the adjective is also without it. additionally, the adjective has the same grammatical ending as the noun it describes. If the noun is marfoo, the adjective describing it is marfoo. If the noun is mansoob, the adjective is also mansoob. And if the noun is majroor, the adjective describing it is also majroor.
