Hey, so I have a friend that plays this game. World of Warcraft. He uses a program which automates gameplay (plays without any human controlling it) and he gets this virtual currency he makes overnight. He sells this currency in exchange for real money. He makes an average of 10$ a day. So he makes money without doing anything. Is this haram? Considering its in a game.

Greetings and peace be with you Alex891; and welcome to the forum,

With any form of gambling, when someone wins £1, someone else has to loose at least £1, and don't forget, the bookmaker takes a cut on top of that. Gambling can become an addiction for many people, because the thought of easy money that you don't have to work for is like a drug.

I watched my uncle, he had a successful business in the 1950's, he ran 25 lorries, owned a huge warehouse, and he lived in a big house with a stable block. In my view he was incredibly unlucky, he went to a casino one night and won thousands, from that one moment of bad luck, he became addicted to gambling.

He died at the age of eighty five, living on benefits and pretty much destitute, having lost millions, he lost his business, house, and wife, he was always looking for a system to beat the odds.

My advice would be, don't get unlucky and win when you are young. Very clever rich people set the odds, they understand the psychology of greed, false hope and easy money better than we do.

In the spirit of earning an honest living

^My uncle used to gamble. One thing I learned, this addiction sure causes lots of marital problems.

Games in general are haram except some. Games like this one have a lot of kufr and shirk so that also makes them haram. Plus they're a waste of time and take you away from the remembrance of Allah and prayer. Another thing is that earning through such means wastes efforts and abilities as you don't develop any skill. And lose anything you have learned thus far. So in the long run, it destroys your abilities and earning potential. $10 a day is not a lot. It is just $300 a month, hardly good for anything. You can't even pay your rent with that. So if you lose your working skills and don't get any work experience, how do you expect to get a proper-paying job when you need it?

Another thing is that nothing in life is free. Businesses won't give you anything free unless they get something in return. So you're helping the gaming company / industry even if it's not gambling.

But it's possible that it's a form of gambling which makes it haram outright. Or it's more likely a means to make one addicted to the game / gambling. Either it's a prefrom of gambling and soon the player will be engaging in actual gambling. Or people might get so addicted to the game that the company is able to charge people for playing, a means of getting market share or producing market demand. Remember that businesses will offer you a free product to try to make you a customer. And since this is not some useful product but a useless, harmful haram thing, it becomes necessary to refrain from it for all the above reasons.

Another reason for it being haram is that in fiqh , a thing that leads to haram is haram. So since this can lead to gambling, it becomes haram.

Your friend is actually cheating by using an automated bot and this kind of activity goes against the rules set in such games. So, from that perspective, it's wrong and he shouldn't do it.

Note: Accidentally liked your post.
