I'm not so sure but I've never heard of Bangali being taught at an academic level, am I right? Although some Islamic Schools teach it at GCSE masha'Allah.
I've studied Urdu, Gujrati and Arabic at School/6th Form and Uni...And the ways in which they were taught varied drastically.
I mean yeah, they all start off with the basics, alphabet etc but from there its all diff.
Hmm...I'm confused about bangali though, there are several types right? Sylheti, Dhakai? And the other one, the *posh* one, I cant remem the name of it. Lol
So0o0o, what advice would you give to somebody who wants to learn it, where to begin? Is it even possible without a teacher, without it being your mother-tongue?

There are majorly two types of bengali. The shylheti one and the posh one which is indeed the dhakai one (unless you bring in the indian bengali which exceeds in its poshness). There's another dialect (the puran dhaka dialect) which isn't very popular anymore. Not many people are heard speaking that these days.
Learning bengali without a teacher is pretty difficult. So you deffinitely will need a teacher who can teach you the basics of the grammar and stuff. But first, you need to decide which dialect you're going to focus on.
Beginning to learn bengali is like beginning any other new language: you begin with 'Hello, what's your name?' etc.
Find a teacher sis; I cant say from where because I havnt got a clue... if you have Bengali friends, maybe you could ask them, inshaAllaah...
There's only one "version" of the language, and the people from Dhakha speak it. You could equate the Shyleti dialect to Cockney English.

sis i wud suggest u to learn the mainstream, real bangla, if u really are interested in learning it. Its no point learning something which is not written in text as when u read bengali u wont get the dilects, right? accept for in written stories, that is different.
I don't think you can really learn Shyleti Bangla from books etc, just like you can't learn Cockney from books.

Akhee I wasnt thinking of learning it from a book. It only now actually that I figured Sylheti is the one I want to learn. But any would be a start tbh.

well , Sylheti is totally different from Bangla/ Bengali.
Local people of Dhaka , Barisal, Sylhet , Noakhali , Chittagong etc etc ....they have their different dialects . It's almost impossible for others to converse / understand their local languages.
