Question: A couple has a certain amount of gold which is in the custody of the wife. Will she have to pay on her own or can her husband pay on her behalf? Answer: In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful As-salāmu ʿalaykum wa-raḥmatullāhi wa-barakātuh Zakāt is liable on the owner of the gold. The owner is the person who bought it, was gifted it or inherited it.
Therefore, if the wife owns the gold, she is responsible to pay the Zakāt of the gold.
However, the husband may pay its Zakāt on her behalf -
Re: Can the husband pay Zakat on behalf of his wife?
The husband can pay the zakat on the wife's behalf. Or he can give her the money and tell her to pay the zakat. In that case, the money he gives her will be a gift to her so she owns it and then she can pay her own zakat from it. A woman should have the desire to give charity and to help others. If not then she needs to get more Islamic knowledge.
I've seen that the more wealth one has, the more one loves wealth more and greed increases. However, if you make yourself give something away in charity, then the greed diminishes and you feel like giving more away. So remove the greed by giving a portion of your wealth to charity - you may have to force yourself the first time. the richer you are the more you should give.
Women (and men) should have the aspiration to sacrifice money to help others, even if they have to sell some of their gold in order to do so. don't become too attached to your wealth. Is it too difficult to sell 2.5% of your gold (possibly the equivalent of a ring or pair of earrings or one bracelet) to pay your own zakat?
Re: Can the husband pay Zakat on behalf of his wife?
The object should be to get more rewards. So while the obligation will be fulfilled when a man pays Zakat on his wife's behalf, the reward goes to the man and not the woman. The woman won't remain a sinner (because she doesn't have zakat outstanding) but she can't expect reward either (because she didn't give zakat from her wealth - her wealth also includes the gifts she was given by the husband and others in addition to any money she earns).
Money and wealth in the world will remain here because we are all going to die one day; the true inheritor is Allah as all will go back to Him. All mankind will die and everything they "owned" will remain behind. The only thing we take with us are our deeds and intentions. So if we gave anything from our wealth in charity, we'll have rewards in the next world. If not, then we won't have rewards. Something worth pondering over.
So next time, pay your own zakat. If you don't have cash, then sell a portion of your gold and pay your zakat. 2.5% is not a lot to give away!

Gold? When I married my husband didn´t give me any gold but the Quran by Arabic. It is more valuable than any gold rings but how I could sell it for giving zakat?
