    Shape of the earth

    Report bad ads?

    [Al-Qur’an 79:30]

“And the earth, moreover, hath He made egg shaped.” Dr Zakir Naik

"And the earth, moreover, hath He extended (to a wide expanse)" Yusuf Ali

"And after that He spread the earth" M. Pickthal

"And the earth, He expanded it after that" M.H. Shakir

Which translation of the verse is correct? Does the same word mean egg shaped? Can some one provide me with the root word of the word Daahahaa?

    Re: Shape of the earth

The "dahu" in the Arabic Language means to extend and even out. It is said: "daha" the thing; "yad'hu dahwan". These terms can mean he either evened out and extended it or he threw it and rolled it. It is also said: "the rain daha the stones from the face of the earth," which means it rolled it and washed it away. It is also said: "The horse passed by yad'hu dahwan," which means he is beating his foot on the ground and yad'hu its sand. Also, the ostrich's mad'hi means its laying of its eggs, and "ad'hiha" is the nest where its chicks are born.

    Arabic-English Dictionary
The Hans Wehr Dictionary of Modern Written Arabic
    Edited by J M. Cowan
    ISBN: 0-87950-001-8

Dahdah and Dahdaah: dumpy, Squat, stocky.
    Dahraja: to roll.
    • Tadahraja: to roll, roll along; to roll down.
    ( [1], page 272)
Daha: to spread out, flatten, level, unroll. [See: Squat and dumpy in Dahdah above]

    Concise Oxford English-Arabic Dictionary
    University Press
    www.oup.com
    ISBN: 0-19-864321-7

    Squat: Dahdah.
    ( [1], page 379)
    Roll:
    • (motion): dahraja, tadahraj.
    • roll over: tadahraj.
    • (rotate): dahraj.
    Roller: madhala.

So as we clearly see, all of the above Arabic words that are derived from "daha" mean:

    1- To extend.
    2- To roll.
    3- To even out.
4- Causing to become egg-shaped or creating, making or producing eggs

    hope that helps insha'Allah..

    Re: Shape of the earth

This is a video I found on Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wppjY...eature=related

Why does this person think earth is flat? The guy does not really look all islamic. So really he probably shoud not be talking about Quran. Ofcourse he is no Dr. Zakir Naik. But I am still interested in what you think about him.

    Re: Shape of the earth

Some people are ignorant.. you need know that when King Roger the II of sicily was offered a globe denoting the earth being round by Abu Abd Allah Muhammad al-Idrisi al-Qurtubi al-Hasani (Arabic أبو عبد الله محمد الإدريسي in the 10th century.. he crushed it, citing the earth is flat.. so frankly that is more a christian belief .. I wouldn't waste my time on the ignorant, be it on youtube or in real life..

It is best to educate oneself on ones history, but not good to extend oneself to every moron that crosses ones path..

    Re: Shape of the earth

How is Islamic history any different from regular history?

It is history, either it happened or it did not.

What you probably meant to say is that you will limit yourself to history about or concerning muslims and islamic teachings, depriving yourself of the world of knowledge that was not discovered by or revealed to muslims.

    Would that be correct?

    All the best wishes,

What is your definition of 'regular history'?

It is history, either it happened or it did not.
Those are wise words indeed.. however, history is many a chapters .. there is History of Mesopotamia and history of the Ming dynasty and everything there is in between.. I believe it is good to brush up on Islamic history so when the likes of you sashay on LI, your pitiable attempts can be adequately thwarted!

What you probably meant to say is that you will limit yourself to history about or concerning muslims and islamic teachings, depriving yourself of the world of knowledge that was not discovered by or revealed to muslims.

I have learned that you indeed like to draw satisfaction out of simplistic conclusions, that you lack subtlety and insight and are driven by extreme and often misleading bias.. I would refrain from advising of what it is I mean!

No matter how you slice it whether,Mesopotamia/ Phoenician/ pharonic/ persian, the same people that housed the cradle of civilization before Islam are the ones who made it flourish under Islam.. If you actually know a little something of history you'd recognize that Islam has touched every aspect, from Raphael's school of athens, to thomas aquinas guardianship or the ******* Rimbaud and his drunken boat, there isn't an aspect of history not touched by Islam or Muslims...

so how about you take a hike?.. to be honest I haven't as of yet met with an atheist that didn't have an offending mephitis about him, and I have just about had all I can take of you for one day!

    All the best wishes,

    Faysal

    cheers
