Can someone please explain if Music is Haram (forbidden) in Islam, why some of the best ever music composers, singer are from our religion. Say Rahat Fateh Ali Khan saab, or Nusrat saab, or Abida Parveen.. they are all pious & religions people. Do we denounce all Sufi singers ? Please explain kindly. Thanks
Shah Alamgir Aurangzeb of the Indian Mughal Sultanate, who ruled the subcontinent for some 49 years had prohibited music and expelled all musicians from the country. The great fiqh book "Fatawa Al-Hindiyya" that was compiled under his order by a council of scholars has a chapter on music where it explicitly states it being haram. For instance they cite the fatwa of Shamsu'l A'imma Al-Halwani, the teacher of famous hanafi scholar Al-Sarakhsi.
And [there is a share for] those who came after them, saying, "Our Lord, forgive us and our brothers who preceded us in faith and put not in our hearts [any] resentment toward those who have believed. Our Lord, indeed You are Kind and Merciful." (Surat al-Hashr, 10)
