I actually enjoyed it. Though, certain scenes were dodgy (random haram acts for example). I only caught the second episode, but I think it was well balanced overall and quite hard-edged. Which makes great t.v

Any particular reason why this is in Refutations? Honest question.

Also, we tend not to discuss television programmes and stuff in here. After all, you wouldn't want Islamic discussions to be drowned out by polls about Family Fortunes, or something.

probably because nobody liked or agreed with it.

Maybe you should close it then Insha'Allah as we don't want these discussions to become commonplace on the forums.

    Re: Britz

    Greetings,

I saw the second one (about Nasima) and, like aamirsaab, I thought it was reasonably well-balanced. For many Western viewers, the programme will be the first time they have heard the long list of Muslim grievances against the West - and that is a good thing. One surprising thing was that there were so many scenes showing Muslims listening to music. Nasima also accompanied the man who was to be her future husband alone at one point. I was practically shouting haram at the TV screen!

Unfortunately, though, the plot had huge holes in it. Nasima's journey from being a medical student to being a suicide bomber just wasn't convincing. Her friend committed suicide after being wrongfully arrested, and she went to about two sessions with radical jihadists (who just happened to be operating freely on a university campus - aye, right) and that was it - she was off to Pakistan, having abandoned her boyfriend, ready to begin training. She also seemed to have forgotten her concerns about Islam's treatment of women, for reasons that were never explained.

On the other hand, one point that was explored excellently was the notion that UK anti-terror legislation is actually making things worse. The injustice of the friend's arrest was made very clear, and it's a situation that I'm sure has happened many times in the UK.

Overall, though, the film didn't really come close to explaining the evil that is suicide bombing. One key point that I think partly explains it (but which went unmentioned) is the belief in an afterlife. If you are certain you're going to heaven after you die, and you have been put under serious pressure and feel you have no options left, then suicide bombing could seem like a reasonable thing to do. Anyone who is more than 'half in love with easeful death' (in Keats' words) is incredibly dangerous, and capable of anything.

    Peace

I think this programme was discussed because it was about muslims and it was sort of creating a bad image of muslims and we just wanted to hear what other people thought of it .

i watched bits of both parts.at times it seemed the drama was well balanced, not too prejudiced against muslims and not too harsh on non muslims, but the overall image that it gave is rubbish.i actually felt disgusted and physically sick with some parts like the muslim girl and her black bf! i mean what the heck.and the muslim guy and her gf! call me innocent or whatever but these were the specific scenes that disturbed me alot
and ofcourse overall as ibn ruwahah said, its all a load of baloney.

I Watched the last 45 mins of the Program as some Brother were talking about it so I thought meh why not.

Had to look away quite a few times due to inappropriate scenes, some scenes I thought were unrealistic, but there was one part which stood out to me. It was when she left the Guys car at the end before she got on the train and the Guy said:

Guy: "You will be at the Right Side Of Allah"

She replied: "That is not why I am doing it"

    Nuff said.

    Post Re: Britz

Somebody I know told me about this, and it did sound a bit sensationalised. I mean, come on, do you think that any British Muslims who get boyfriends are really abducted to Afganistan and given forced marriages, and their bfs put in cages?
There have been a number of cases of forced marriage in real life, I give you that, but its like anorexia or online kid-stealers or OCD: it hardly ever happens, but when it does it is so dramatic that people become obsessed with it and talk about it all the time! I think I will can this process exaggerlation.

A lot of people on this thread don't seem to get what this show was really meant to be about but czgibson got it.

I was really bored when watching it and don't necessarily think the characters were perfect muslims. But the whole point of it was to show that the war on terror has in fact done more bad than good - and apparently this is what caused the July train bombings.

The show got me thinking though. There was one particular scene where a female lead (muslim) was debating with someone that instead of lethal combat... we should protest and/or change how bad things are by becoming a politician. Obviously suicide bombing innocents is haram but can the political path really make a difference?

I was really bored when watching it and don't necessarily think the characters were perfect muslims.
i wouldnt take that notion of imperfect muslims so lightly, okay, muslims drink and swear and wear tight and transparent clothes and muslim girls sleep with their black boyfriends and so forth but it still makes me sick to think we are portrayed in this way and frightens me even more that it may be true.

But the whole point of it was to show that the war on terror has in fact done more bad than good - and apparently this is what caused the July train bombings

mmmm maybe.it can be interpreted in a number of ways, maybe thats what it looks like but ill always believe that anything supporting muslims on tv has a cynical side to it,ironic, snide and patronising.their trying to show something good but really they feel sorry for us and are laughing behind our backs.cal me pessimist but thats what i think.

The show got me thinking though. the political path can make a difference, but if only they would ever let such negotiations succeed.they drag us to the discussion table but when we propose our conditions they ignore or amend them such that they are meaningless.and how many muslim politicians are there? and if they are what are they doing? so yes political participation is vital, yet because of this very reason muslims are not allowed to enter such high positions where they are able to make a difference.
