Catholic Church no longer swears by truth of the Bible

THE hierarchy of the Roman Catholic Church has published a teaching document instructing the faithful that some parts of the Bible are not actually true.

The Catholic bishops of England, Wales and Scotland are warning their five million worshippers, as well as any others drawn to the study of scripture, that they should not expect “total accuracy” from the Bible.

“We should not expect to find in Scripture full scientific accuracy or complete historical precision,” they say in The Gift of Scripture.

The document is timely, coming as it does amid the rise of the religious Right, in particular in the US.

Some Christians want a literal interpretation of the story of creation, as told in Genesis, taught alongside Darwin’s theory of evolution in schools, believing “intelligent design” to be an equally plausible theory of how the world began.

But the first 11 chapters of Genesis, in which two different and at times conflicting stories of creation are told, are among those that this country’s Catholic bishops insist cannot be “historical”. At most, they say, they may contain “historical traces”.

The document shows how far the Catholic Church has come since the 17th century, when Galileo was condemned as a heretic for flouting a near-universal belief in the divine inspiration of the Bible by advocating the Copernican view of the solar system. Only a century ago, Pope Pius X condemned Modernist Catholic scholars who adapted historical-critical methods of analysing ancient literature to the Bible.

In the document, the bishops acknowledge their debt to biblical scholars. They say the Bible must be approached in the knowledge that it is “God’s word expressed in human language” and that proper acknowledgement should be given both to the word of God and its human dimensions.

They say the Church must offer the gospel in ways “appropriate to changing times, intelligible and attractive to our contemporaries”.

The Bible is true in passages relating to human salvation, they say, but continue: “We should not expect total accuracy from the Bible in other, secular matters.”

They go on to condemn fundamentalism for its “intransigent intolerance” and to warn of “significant dangers” involved in a fundamentalist approach.

“Such an approach is dangerous, for example, when people of one nation or group see in the Bible a mandate for their own superiority, and even consider themselves permitted by the Bible to use violence against others.”

Of the notorious anti-Jewish curse in Matthew 27:25, “His blood be on us and on our children”, a passage used to justify centuries of anti-Semitism, the bishops say these and other words must never be used again as a pretext to treat Jewish people with contempt. Describing this passage as an example of dramatic exaggeration, the bishops say they have had “tragic consequences” in encouraging hatred and persecution. “The attitudes and language of first-century quarrels between Jews and Jewish Christians should never again be emulated in relations between Jews and Christians.”

As examples of passages not to be taken literally, the bishops cite the early chapters of Genesis, comparing them with early creation legends from other cultures, especially from the ancient East. The bishops say it is clear that the primary purpose of these chapters was to provide religious teaching and that they could not be described as historical writing.

Similarly, they refute the apocalyptic prophecies of Revelation, the last book of the Christian Bible, in which the writer describes the work of the risen Jesus, the death of the Beast and the wedding feast of Christ the Lamb.

The bishops say: “Such symbolic language must be respected for what it is, and is not to be interpreted literally. We should not expect to discover in this book details about the end of the world, about how many will be saved and about when the end will come.”

In their foreword to the teaching document, the two most senior Catholics of the land, Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O’Connor, Archbishop of Westminster, and Cardinal Keith O’Brien, Archbishop of St Andrew’s and Edinburgh, explain its context.

They say people today are searching for what is worthwhile, what has real value, what can be trusted and what is really true.

The new teaching has been issued as part of the 40th anniversary celebrations of Dei Verbum, the Second Vatican Council document explaining the place of Scripture in revelation. In the past 40 years, Catholics have learnt more than ever before to cherish the Bible. “We have rediscovered the Bible as a precious treasure, both ancient and ever new.”

A Christian charity is sending a film about the Christmas story to every primary school in Britain after hearing of a young boy who asked his teacher why Mary and Joseph had named their baby after a swear word. The Breakout Trust raised £200,000 to make the 30-minute animated film, It’s a Boy. Steve Legg, head of the charity, said: “There are over 12 million children in the UK and only 756,000 of them go to church regularly.

That leaves a staggering number who are probably not receiving basic Christian teaching.”

I think this response to a similar question by a catholic priest should answer the question.

Re: Catholic Church no longer swears by the truth of the Bible

Within the Catholic faith, one or a couple of bishops making a statement does not in itself speak on behalf of the entire faith. There must be an official Magisterial statement or an 'Ex Cathedra' declaration from the Pope to make some statement official. In fact, the Catholic Catechism (official Magisterial teaching) states this:

136 God is the author of Sacred Scripture because he inspired its human authors; he acts in them and by means of them. He thus gives assurance that their writings teach without error his saving truth (cf. DV 11).

Not only that but it must be considered that a passage may, for instance, intend to portray God's creation of the universe in a poetic manner rather than in a technical and scientific manner. God has gifted us with various literary devices and means with which to convey certain messages. Example: "The earth will be turned upside down before the great day of judgment" is a true statement, not because the earth will be literally turned upside down (that is merely a literary device, a figure of speech) but because it is saying "the world will be in chaos before the great day of judgment."

Re: Catholic Church no longer swears by the truth of the Bible

Going back to my ancient Catholic Childhood in the 1940s. Even back then we were actually discouraged from reading the bible and followed Church doctrine and Canons. If we did read the bible in those days we were instructed to do so with the guidance of a priest as there were many things to be taken as metaphorical and not factual. Catholics never were taught the Bible was literaly true.

Although times may have changed, in the past very few Catholics ever read the Bible and those who did, few if any believed it to be literaly true.

Since that report in the OP was in regards to Catholics, I doubt if that ruling is going to have any effect on non-Catholics and it is no change from what Catholics had been taught all along anyhow.

Keep in mind many Bible Based Christian denominations do not believe Catholics to be Christian.

Interesting that you were Catholic! And nice to meet you. I would like to mention that Catholics regard the bible as entirely factual and true, but not as a thing to be taken at face-value in every instance. That is to say, a passage may be a detailed metaphor which is entirely factual and true not because of the face value of the words but because of the underlying message.

Re: Catholic Church no longer swears by the truth of the Bible

I suppose another way to look at it is that there is a struggle in the Catholic Church between those that believe in the supernatural and those that don't. For those that don't its perfectly logical that one could say all faiths are equal as they're judging by the worlds standards and not God's. Yet, those that believe in the supenatural tend to put all their eggs in one basket thus to them there really is only one true faith and thats the Church. To them, other faiths may have kernals of truth within them, but the fullness of truth can only be found in the Catholic Church. Of course this could be viewed as extremely offensive and yes even intolerant to those with a different religious view. Thus, the narrow gate. How can Catholics get the message out and evangelize? Simply put with love and kindness and gentle correction. We're warned even then that many won't listen and we would suffer for it. But Jesus said it was better to lose one's life for his sake rather save it and lose the one after I forgot the rest of the quote but you get the jest.

    Peace be with you

is this a bit like when some non-Muslims take the literal meaning of the Quran and blow it out of proportion - because they haven't read the Quran with Tafsir (exegesis) ?

I see a common human trait in that we are prone to take things too literally without understanding the nature of what we are studying... hmmm...

Re: Catholic Church no longer swears by the truth of the Bible

    Salam to all,

Don't be to quick to rejoice a dent in the R.C.C for they have survived for nearly two millenniums through wars, scandal and whatever one may conceive and yet here they are still strong.
As long as they have a Pope everything else is immaterial to them.
The Bible is just an Identification card to the Pope's infallible word and Divinely appointed presence granting all their members citizenship to heaven.
No other Christian church has their power political (they are their own independent state) and financial (they own three banks dozens of copmanies plus they are largest real estate holders in Europe)
The world's criticism from that balcony must seem like an ant's bite.
And yet they say there is no Cosa Nostra !
No country can boast to have the dedicated army of scribes, librarians, scholars, propagators, administrators and general servants to their cause as the R.C.C does.
That's why they can ignore one and all for after all what else do they need that they don't already have, maybe more cash ?
    Masalam
