Books you love or hate (OP)

Who likes to read, and what?

I am a devoted bookworm from a long line of bookworms on both the maternal and paternal side. Which means I read everything in sight. My favorite books are fiction, and I like SF, Fantasy and Historic Fiction and Humour.

    My favourite authors are :
    James H Schmitz
    Lois McMaster Bujold
    Steve Miller & Sharon Lee
    Patricia Briggs
    Roald Dahl
    Terry Pratchett

Authors whom I wouldn't read if I was stranded on a desert island for ever and ever with only one book and no chance of rescue.

Well, Harry Turtledove is rather crude, in language. He says words most authors are like "not a good idea" its cause he doesn't care, he tells you how they actually thought back then, and he actually researches, unlike so many authors today.

Stories of the Sahabah Series by Noura Durkee
Khalid Bin Walid by A I Akram
Fiqh ul Akbar, commentary by Mufti Abdur Rahman Manghera
I love harry potter, not a huge fan of the movies though. I think that the author incorporates everything into the series, theres a bit of romance, humour, action, tragedy and suspense.

I also enjoy reading Jodi Picoult's novels, currently busy with harvesting the heart.

Before this thread goes any further, I think all of us should read the following page especially the harry potterans, narnians, twilighters, eragonians etc.

If Allah helps you, none can overcome you; and if He forsakes you, who is there after Him that can help you? And in Allah (Alone) let believers put their trust.
    Surah Ale Imran : 160

It was narrated that Anas ibn Maalik (may Allaah be pleased with him) said:
The Prophet (blessings and peace of Allaah be upon him) climbed up Uhud, accompanied by Abu Bakr, ‘Umar and ‘Uthmaan, and the mountain shook with them. He struck it with his foot and said: “Stand firm, O Uhud, for there is no one on you but a Prophet or a Siddeeq or two martyrs.”
    Narrated by al-Bukhaari (3483)

Allah (Subhaanahu Wa Taala) does not inspire seeking forgiveness in a slave whom he wishes to punish.

To Kill a Mockingbird might be better with a analytical view of it, and considering the history of that time period... Otherwise, yea it would come off as overrated.

The Innocent Man and The Devil's Knot are really good books, both real life stories. Can't remember any other books I read recently. :X

Re: Books you love or hate

I remember on my old forum a sister suggested this book called Lock & Key.

Later figured it was a girl's book full of love and romance. >_>

But I would recommend the Noura Durkee Series of the Sahabah. Full of stories that are entertaining and full of lessons and morals from the righteous.

another book I recommend: Medicine of the Prophet, by ibn Jawziyya. Mashallah, such an informative book.

Also, First Things First, by Khalid Baig. Overpriced >_> but still good mashallah. Well, can't say it';s overpriced. It has tons of good knowledge in it masha'Allah.

In terms of story books... Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry? I used to read them when I was in High School. Now I just read text books. >_>

Indeed. I have two copies, though. Lots of interesting stuff. I always refer to it. And before I read the book, I never knew what Ruqayya was. Fascinating!

I confess that in one point in my life, I opened a forum and club for harry potter. Over a hundred people joined, too.:X

I used to read the rumors etc as well. I hate the movies as well, though I've only watched a few minutes of one. I read the reviews and was disgusted. I think Rowling also got too perverted in the last few books. Just an opinion. That's why I didn't go all crazy when she stopped at 7. Too much Romance.

Re: Books you love or hate

I finally found a copy of Blade of Tyshalle by Matthew Woodring Stover that did not cost my spleen. The book blends deconstructive fantasy with chaos theory, the existence or illusion of free-will, different types of courage, the nature of morality, the nature of religion, the nature of both mental and physical pain and sheer blood-pumping, visceral martial arts action. If all this is giving you the idea that it is a brilliantly written masterpiece, that's because it is.

Also, last night I finished reading Perdido Street Station by China Mieville. It's an excellent read. Such imagination from start to finish, elements of horror, socio-political themes including different types of religion that could result from the fantasy world Mieville has created. Certain themes are recognisable in everyday life - it's not an 'escapist fantasy' at all. It's a fantastic, believable and stunningly realised literary accomplishment.

Now, for a complete change of pace, I just need to read something by Cormac McCarthy...

Those both sound very interesting. I'll have to see if my library has them.

On a (quasi) related note, I absolutely adore the Hunger Game series by Suzanne Collins. It's a kid's book, but not a dumbed down kids book. It's really easy to read, so it's a good escapist fantasy if you're not looking to think too hard.

^That was a bit of an exaggeration, but it was a disturbing book overall. Just the way the author killed off the characters was pretty gruesome and gory. Or maybe I felt that way because I was in elementary school when I read it.
