    The Arabic Poetry Thread (OP)

Feel free to share. Please include translations though. JazakAllah khayr.

Let not your tongue mention the shame of another
For you yourself are covered in shame and all men have tongues.
If your eye falls upon the sins of your brother
Shield them and say: "O my eye! All men have eyes!"

    Poetry from our pious predecessors…

A man wrote to Saalih ibn ‘Abd al-Quddoos:
Death is a door that everyone is passing through
O if only I knew! What homes lies there after the door
So he replied to him saying:
The Home is Everlasting Paradise if you’ve done that which pleases Allaah
And if other than that, then it is Hell-fire
They are two places, people have none other than them
So look for yourself, which one will you choose?

    Re: The Arabic Poetry Thread

It is said that Imām Shāfiýī was asked a question and he was silent for a long time. He was asked again whether he would answer it or not. He replied, ‘I am yet to decide what is better: to answer or to keep quiet’.

qul bimā shiyta fī masabbati írđī
    fa sukūtī áni’l laýīmi jawāb
    mā ana ádimu’l jawābi walākin
mā mina’l usdi an tujība’l kilāb

Say what you will in abuse,
My silence is an answer to the scoundrel –
I am not devoid of an answer, but:
It is not necessary for a lion to answer the dogs.

    Re: The Arabic Poetry Thread

Lovely thread, too bad I found this thread later after I had done my A'Level Arabic in my country, I had problem and slept when answering poetry questions because I have no reference at that time concerning Arabic poetry. Alhamdulillah I passed the paper although learning High Arabic for only seven months. Now I wanted to memorize all of these poetry, Insya-Allah I can see that they are very useful, not merely beautiful words.

How many long nights passed by me

For I was unable to recollect knowledge

Due to my preoccupation in misdeed

Indeed, I have discerned after repentance that I have

    Disobeyed my Lord greatly

    However with firm determination

I am trying to depart my disobeying and sinning

Oh! The most merciful, the one full of bounty, bestow your grace

upon a poor slave who seeks (your) blessings

forgive me, and supplement it with your grand pardon

And raise me (by entering me) in paradise and al-firdous

Seriously, this is an awesome line. And the amazing thing is, it only makes sense in Arabic, it completely looses its meaning and reasoning when it's translated into English or any other language. Really beautiful line. Where did you get it from? Part of an article or from a longer poem?

This is one of hadhrat hassan bin thabit radhiallahu ta'aala anhu's poems, about the Prophet (saw)

Wa a7sanu minka lam taraqatu 3ayni
Wa ajmalu mika lam talidin nisaa

    Khalaqta mubarra'an min kulli 3aybin
Ka annaka qad khalaqta kama tashaa

My eyes have not seen more beautiful person than you
No women has given birth to a more beautiful person than you

You have been created without any weakness and blemish
As if you have been created as you wished to be created

The translation really doesn't do justice to the arabic.

It is apparantly just an Arabic saying?? And its not part of a longer poem neither is it written by Imaam Ash-Shafi'ee. Sorry

    AsSalamOAlaikum WaRehmatuAllah WaBarkatuhu
nuniyyah - The Arabic Poetry Thread

    Ibn Qayyim Al-Jawziyyah's (691H - 751H)

'Qasidah Nuniyyah' (on the Description of Jannah) Recited by Abdul Aziz Al-Matrafy. Qasidah Nuniyyah being the Arabic for, 'A Poem, all the verses of which end with the letter Nun. Trays of gold and cups will be passed round them, (there will be) therein all that the one's inner-selves could desire, all that the eyes could delight in, and you will abide therein forever. This is the Paradise which you have been made to inherit because of your deeds which you used to do (in the life of the world). Therein for you will be fruits in plenty, of which you will eat (as you desire). (Al-Quran, 43: 71-73) Abu Hurairah Narrates that the Prophet said, Almighty Allah says, 'I have prepared for my pious servants that which no eye has seen and no ear has heard and neither has the thought occurred in any persons' heart, so recite if you wish'. 'No soul knows what pleasures are hidden for him' (Al-Qur'an, 32: 17)

I wanted to ask if anyone got the full english translaton to this poem because it sounds awesome, and whats the importance of having "Nun" at the end of the line?

What do you think of the poem?
