    Selling haram

    Report bad ads?

    Greetings.

Consider a scenario in which I have to work in a placement intentionally for a good cause, but I'll have no choice but to sell, what Islam deems as 'haram'. We're talking about cigarettes, alcohol, pork, etc.

Would it not be somewhat halal for me, according to Islam, to have worked there anyway, because my intentions were for a good cause and not necessarily to sell the above mentioned things?

I'll give you an example of a good cause - there are currently not enough jobs running on the market, and I only have a limited set of choices. In order to support my family and myself financially, I need to work in that particular job-place.

Example two: I'm working there because I would like to help a co-worker in some thing personal, but the only way the co-worker can reduce his/her bad habits is if he/she is in my company (in other words, we'll be doing the same activities...in which case he/she will join me in what ever positive things I'll be getting on with in break-times and what not).

    Many thanks!

    Re: Selling haram

    Any takers?

How about I summarize the question: Is it prohibited or haram to work in a place where among other things, you have to sell cigars, alcohol, pork etc.?

    Re: Selling haram

There is no such things as "somewhat halal" or "somewhat haraam", in Islam the haraam and the halaal is clear. If drinking alcohol is haram then even a sip is haraam. If anything forbidden then it's sale is forbidden as well. You can't go agains the commands of Allah and yet claim to have good intentions and aim to please Allah. There are plenty of pure halal and better ways to doing things or working at places for good causes.

let me ask you the question..

bad economy, limited jobs, you are not very skilled at much, easy way to make some money to feed your kids, is to work in a 'gentleman's' club would you do it?

    Re: Selling haram

^ In my opinion, just the fact she asks this questions, shows she cares. Many, many would go "oh I'm not drinking it, so who cares if I sell it" but this lady came and asked, caring about details, mashaAllah.
I find it rude to go and ask her such a question, about and "gentlemen's club". Anyways...

livanae, you might find these links useful inshaAllah:

In short, it is regarded prohibited, but if it is an extreme situation as far as I've understood, that can differ. But you are not in an extreme situation. Rather think it is best your money is as halal as possible, for then it is spent most halal aswell. We have a saying in my country "haram spent, haram went", meaning haram-made money will just dissappear and never be enough, best is halal. I do believe if you search again for other works, you can find something just as good.

Last but not least, you could try and ask some Imam or scholar near you, or try the fatawa sites on the Internet. And alternatively, you can search through other work options in that okace, maybe ask your boss not to sell the haram things, but work otherwise in the place. (I assume it is an store)

    Re: Selling haram

I just wanted to say this as a reminder for everybody including myself:

If you were forced to sell haram at the workplace, and you stayed knowing what your doing is haram, Allah knows best there will be no blessing in the money you make. If you were to leave your job and do something halal even for less money, with Allah's blessing you will live happier and fuller than you were before.

This is not just talk. I have witnessed this and felt this myself, and inshallah you wont have anything to worry about.

    Salam.

    Re: Selling haram

I agree, If you can find something else even if the pay is less, go for it. Whoever leaves something for the sake of allah, then Allah will replace it with something better. All i can say is keep looking for something else.

With regards to you intention, you should make you intention to leave for something Halal and allah will reward you. Its like me saying i was to give to charities so i will play the lotto and the winning will go to the poor, that does not work.

May Allah make it easy for you
