Praise be to Allah and peace and blessings be on His Prophet SAWS.
Smoking is one of the things which has caused a lot of problems and harm these days and it has spread like wild fire. Before we discuss this topic in detail, we should know that Allaah the Almighty has divided things in the world into two types, good or permissible (al-tayyibaat, al-halaal) and evil or prohibited (al-khabaa'ith, al-haraam), and there is no third type. Allah says (interpretation of the meaning) in surat al-A'raaf (7:157):
"And He makes good things halaal for them and bad things haraam."
Considering this fact, smoking can either be permissible and good or prohibited and evil.
Thus, we present some of its characteristics and let the person asking the question see himself in which type lies smoking.
1. There is no disagreement among the physicians and sane people that smoking is harmful for health. It is one of the major causes of lung cancer and other diseases. It is also one of the major causes of death. Since, it is known that the Islamic law prohibits everything that is harmful for a human being. Allah said (interpretation of meaning):
"Do not kill yourself. Allah is Merciful unto you." (Surat al-Nisaa' 4:29)
In addition, His Prophet SAWS (peace be upon him) said:
"There is no harm or causing of harm (in Islaam)." (Arabic "laa darar wa laa diraar")
He SAWS (peace be upon him) also said:
"A person will not be able to move on the Day of Judgment until he is asked about ... his body as to what he engaged it in."
Smoking also goes against the saying of the Prophet SAWS:
"Your body has a right on you."
2. There is no disagreement among the physicians and sane people that smoking is harmful for the health of others who inhale the polluted breath of the smoker. Medical research has proven the harmful effects of smoking mothers on their children.
3. The offensive smell caused by smoking is a source of pain to the worshippers of Allah among humans and angels. The angels are offended and suffer from the same things that the human beings suffer from. Allah said (interpretation of the meaning):
"Those who cause harm to believing men and women without any reason do a great sin." (Surat al-Ahzaab, 33:58)
4. The money that is spent on cigarettes is used on buying a harmful thing and is therefore an extravagance. Allah said (interpretation of the meaning):
"… and do not be extravagant wasters. Those who are extravagant are kinsmen of Satan." (Surat al-Israa' 17:26-27)
Extravagance (in Islam) means spending on something haraam.
Spending money on cigarettes is a waste of resources as well. The Prophet SAWS (peace be upon him) said:
"A person will not be able to move on the Day of Judgment until he is asked about ..... what he owned as to how he spent it."
Considering all that has been presented, it can be clearly seen that smoking is an evil among many others. It is not permissible to indulge in it, or buy and sell it, or even to offer it to others. It is incumbent on a person who is addicted to it that he must make all efforts and get whatever necessary treatment to stop it. If the unbelievers have understood the harm caused by smoking and made laws regarding it, the Muslims should be even more eager to stop it and treat those who are addicted to it.
We ask Allah the Almighty to cure everyone indulging in this evil and help him in giving it up. Allah is the Best Guide to the Right Path.
Perhaps you know that all nations of the world – Muslim and kaafir alike – have now started to fight smoking, because they know that it is very harmful. Islam forbids everything that is harmful, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “There should be no harming or reciprocating harm.”
Undoubtedly there are foods and drinks which are beneficial and good, and others which are harmful and bad. Allaah described our Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) in the following terms (interpretation of the meaning):
“he allows them as lawful At Tayyibaat (i.e. all good and lawful as regards things, deeds, beliefs, persons and foods), and prohibits them as unlawful Al Khabaa’ith (i.e. all evil and unlawful as regards things, deeds, beliefs, persons and foods)
[al-A’raaf 7:157]
Is smoking one of the good and lawful things (al-tayyibaat) or one of the evil and unlawful things (al-khabaa’ith)?
Secondly: it was narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Allaah forbids you to trade gossip, to ask too many questions and to waste money.” And Allaah forbade wasteful extravagance when He said (interpretation of the meaning):
“and eat and drink but waste not by extravagance, certainly He (Allaah) likes not Al Musrifoon (those who waste by extravagance) [al-A’raaf 7:31]
And He described the slaves of the Most Merciful as follows (interpretation of the meaning):
“And those who, when they spend, are neither extravagant nor niggardly, but hold a medium (way) between those (extremes)” [al-Furqaan 25:67]
The whole world now knows that the money spent on smoking is to be considered as money wasted, from which no benefit is gained; indeed, it is money spent on something harmful. If the money which is spent on smoking worldwide were to be collected, it could have saved entire populations who have died of starvation. Is there anyone more foolish that one who holds a dollar bill and sets fire to it? What is the difference between him and the one who smokes? Indeed, the smoker is more foolish, because the folly of the one who burns a dollar bill ends there, whilst the one who smokes burns his money and also harms his body.
Thirdly: how many disasters have been caused by smoking, because of cigarette butts which are thrown away and cause fires. Other disasters have been caused in other ways, as when a house was burned down with its occupants inside, when a man lit his cigarette when there was a gas leak.
Fourthly: how many people are offended by the smell of smokers, especially when you are unfortunate enough to have one of them standing next to you in the mosque. Probably any nasty smell is easier to bear than the smell of the smoker’s mouth when he has just woken up. It is amazing how many women can put up with the smell of their husbands’ mouths! The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) forbade those who had eaten garlic or onions from coming to the mosque so that they would not offend their fellow-worshippers with their smell. The smell of onions and garlic is easier to bear than the smell of the smoker and his mouth.
These are some of the reasons why smoking is haraam.
I was under the impression cigarettes were haram because they ruined your health and as Muslims we should take care of our health and you should do anything to prolong your life and smoking cigarettes is the complete opposite of that.
They are haram because firstly we are supposed to keep ourselves healthy so we can live according to how Allah wants us to. And also cigarretes contain alcohol which is so clearly haram.

Yes, cigarettes have alcohol, by the way nicotine isn't harmful, if so, potatoes, tomatoes, and all peppers would be haram, because these plants produce nicotine. Nicotine in normal amounts is actually good for you. In cigarettes, it's all the poison additives that are haram because they kill you and haram because some are alcohol. Arak - An alcoholic beverage made from Anise seed (Anisyl Alcohol), mainly produces in Iraq.
Rum - A Caribbean alcohol beverage (see Puerto Rico)
Ethyl Alcohol - Pure Grain Alcohol, aka Moonshine
These are just name a few of the khamra that is in cigarettes...so, just because of the khamra, they are haram. I smoked for 13 years and I had to quit, if only for Allah, for fear of consuming khamr.

Cigarettes contain carcinogens that are harmful and addictive. Being addicted to a substance doesn't allow a person to make the correct decisions.
The more information and facts you provide the more a person addicted will justify the addiction with requesting facts from Quran and the Sunnah banning it.
There are no benefits from smoking. The negative and harmful effects from second hand smoke is scientifically documented. That will not prevent a smoker from smoking. If a person doesn't care about their own health they definitely will not care about yours or their love ones being effected by the second hand carcinogens.

Well, most smokers don't care because cigarette is addictive.
It's just like any other drug.
You ask any smoker to quit, and it's very hard.
alhamdulillah I am never a smoker, but my father died at quite young age (48) from smoking cigarettes.
^^I would assume it IS haraam but you do have people, even articles on how it's not haraam but rather makruh because it's not as "bad" as drinking and doesn't have the quick affects like drinking. I never did understand why people consider it makruh since it's AWFULLY bad for your health. Recently I read smoking can also cause blindness...shouldn't that be more of a reason to QUIT plus 100 other reasons

Many rulings are based upon cultural trends. Following the West in the promotion of their harmful fitna and commercial enterprises that have been documented by the Tobacco companies. Many developing countries are twenty years behind popular trends that have been documented as harmful.

Oh its not easy to quit i tried many times and failed even used nicotine patches and gums. What a waste of money . After using nicotine patches or gums i realised that the strong will is the only key for quitting . Also the social life your living can effect the process . And the low price of cigarettes its like 1$ for a pack of cigs Here in leb and its allowed to smoke anywhere .
By the way after a week of quitting i started to feel better or started to slightly forget about smoking but whats more addictive is the psychological dependence on cigarettes and here comes the toughest part cos you will always see someone smoking infront of you even if you sit in a cafe while drinking your coffee cos smokers enjoys smoking while drinking coffee ,reading the news paper watching a movie driving your car .... Anything you can imagine will trigger the urge for a cig
And really non smokers doesn't know how it feels like its really really really not easy to quit.
But why start in the first place? What made you even want to consider it?
I never understood what makes people start, apart from peer pressure, fitting in or it being "in."
Everyone knows how harmful it is. It's not even that it probably tastes good, it just has things in it that gets you addicted.

I don't think anyone is being critical of the person who is addicted to the nicotine just the people who smoke that have institutions assisting them in justifying the usage. Any addiction is difficult to overcome. We hope that you overcome your addiction with the help of Allah.
Following the West's social trends that they despise and hate.
Now that the West and developed countries acknowledge the harm of the nicotine it will take another fifty years for that trend to be copied.
