Nida Trust presents, in partnership with the Muslim Teachers Association (MTA), the Muslim Teachers and Educators Committee (MTEC) and the University of East London...

    Why Teach?' seminar

It is our great pleasure to invite you to the 'Why Teach?' seminar as part of Nida Trust's You Teach Programme. This will be the second of an ongoing series of seminars which aim to encourage and support those wishing to pursue a career in the field of teaching.

    Date: Sunday 14th September 2008
Time: 2 pm to 5 pm
Venue: Ebrahim College, 80 Greenfield Road, London, E1 1EJ
(5 mins walk from Whitechapel/Aldgate East tube stations)

National statistics show that Muslim pupils are underachieving nationally (36% of British Muslims are leaving school with no qualifications) and that there are exceptionally low numbers of Muslim teachers in mainstream schools. Those in the teaching profession believe there is a link between these two facts and so it is the aim of Nida Trust to encourage more young Muslims to become teachers.

The You Teach Programme aims to do this by creating an awareness of the teaching profession in the Muslim community and encouraging young Muslims to pursue their interest in teaching, through school placements and University based teachers training. For those already taking the first steps into teaching (beginner teachers and newly qualified teachers), the You Teach Programme will provide a support network through mentoring and specialised forums.

    The structure of the seminar:

Why Teach? The importance of having more Muslim teachers
Shahina Ahmad, President, Muslim Teachers Association (MTA)

Interactive session: What do you know about teaching?
    Foezul Ali, Chairman, Nida Trust

    Beyond the Classroom
Jillur Hoque, Muslim Teachers & Educators Committee (MTEC)

    Different routes into teaching
Nasima Hassan, Senior Lecturer, University of East London

How the 'You Teach' programme can help!
Sahar Zahid, You Teach Coordinator, Nida Trust

    Aims of the session:

To highlight the importance of Muslim teachers within mainstream schools
To encourage members of the Muslim community to pursue a career in teaching
To create an awareness of the benefits of teaching (especially as a Muslim teacher)
To overcome any misconceptions there are regarding the teaching profession
To explore the different routes young Muslims may take to enter into the teaching profession
To highlight the structure of the 'You Teach Programme'

    Learning Outcomes of the session:

Many young educated Muslims will gain an insight into the steps into teaching
The Muslim Community will become aware of the significant role played by Muslim teachers in mainstream schools and their impact on raising achievement of Muslim pupils
Participants will explore the support offered by Nida Trust through the You Teach Programme.

Admission is FREE. As there are only 30 places available, please book early to avoid disappointment. Refreshments will be provided (for those not fasting).

Book your place(s) online: www.nidatrust.org.uk or email: [email protected]

For further information please call: 07983 804 410.
