But what they have done can be lessons for us.

Not only.
I think bro FFImann is saying that so as to remind us not to bee too criticising/disapproving of reletive marriages.
^ It does. The fact that the Ali (ra) did it and that the Quran allows it, should matter a whole lot when discussing this topic. Because of this, you cannot just dismiss it as Pakistani culture or whatever. I am not a FAN of relative marriages, but certainly not Against them.
I'm actually stuck in this situation and I'm pretty confused! I have lots of cousins my age or pretty close to it, and I always thought it was weird for people to do that. But the story about this one cousin is different from the rest.
We don't live in the same country anymore but when we did, our families were very close when we were young. Just recently they came to visit for 2 weeks (this was about 10 years later from when we last met, we were still kids). By the time they left, I felt really attached to her. I'm a few months older and we both have the same interests, goals, etc. etc.
I've never talked to anyone about this but my family keeps teasing me by saying that we should get married, apparently we make a good couple. Of course I shrugged it off and played it off so they wouldn't get the hint that I liked her. If it was any other girl, I would have no problem talking to my family and her family about it, but this is my COUSIN!
I'm pretty confused as to what my next step would be. I can't tell my family because they would tell their family and I don't want to tell her because I don't know how she feels and we have a pretty good relationship (family wise), and I just think that if I tell her and she felt the opposite way, that it would always be weird anytime our families met again, or worse, I would never want to be around her due to embarrassment.
Although this kind of relationship between cousins is a lot more common in the west than people think (by west I mean Americans), this isn't my issue and whether people accept it or not. I don't care. All my life I never thought I would ever be in a position like this and now here I am talking about liking my cousin. I'm in no way against it, but at the same time, I was never really prepared for it.

but whats wrong with that? cousin or not, you sound like you really like her...i would take the next step, inshallah.

i would just send it through some one. what i mean is get a mutual friend/relative,etc (could even get the local imam to "mediate" between the two families) to ask her what she thinks of a guy that's ....<---and basically a general description (not necessarily physically), etc but without making it known that its you.
or maybe (again through the mutual friend/relative, etc ) what she would think of marrying one of her cousins.

well things dont always happen the way we want them, but if a good opportunity "knocks on your door" without you expecting it, i advice you to go for it.
it sounds like you really like her...so i would give it a go.
...desperate for husnul-khitaam...
please make dua that Allah grants me a good end (to my life). please make dua that Allah guides me.

I agree...
go for it akhi u seem to like her for sure. Why dont u speak to ur family about it?
^A niece is the daughter of your brother or sister. Ali was not the brother of prophet Muhammad peace be upon him.
Yeah Ali (ra) was the son of the prophets uncle - not the prophets brother!
Marrying your niece is Haram.
Do you think the pious don't sin?
They merely:
Veiled themselves and didn't flaunt it
Sought forgiveness and didn't persist
Took ownership of it and don't justify it
And acted with excellence after they had erred - Ibn al-Qayyim
practically speaking, i am 1000% against it. the way it is practiced is to import someone from back home while there are good brothers and sisters in communities that dont get a fair shot because people wanna keep it in the family.
