    Re: Adoption

I am pretty sure adoption of orphans especially, is highly applauded in Islam. The Qur'an talks quite a bit about treating orphans well and ensuring they get all that belongs to them once they come of age etc. I am no expert on the rules of Islam etc..being a new revert (since March, '12) so can't think of appropriate quotes to prove this, but I am pretty sure adoption is accepted in Islam.

    Re: Adoption

to put that in English fostering a child is permitted whereas taking away their identity and claiming them as yours isn't. A child's identity or name is solely that of the biological father. Fostering and treating them well as if they're your own is highly encouraged and applauded.

    Re: Adoption

you can adopt them, but you have to call them by their real parents' names,
you can't deceive them and pretend you bore them.

In today's world, many adopted children grow up wanting to learn about their birth mothers and fathers, and many suffer years of anguish when that information is kept secret from them. In Islam, one stipulation when adopting a child is that the child must carry his or her own family name. This is done in honor and respect for the child's parentage and to ensure that children feel connected to their birth families.
    The Qur'an is clear:
“Nor has Allah made your adopted sons your real sons. Such is only your way of speech by your mouths, but Allah tells you the truth and Allah shows you the right way.
Call them by the names of their fathers; that is more just in the sight of Allah.
But if you do not know their father's name, then call them your brothers in faith, or your associate.
There is no blame upon you if you make mistakes; what counts is the intention in your heart”
    (Qur'an 33:4–5).

Muslims are to recognize that no matter their feelings and desires, adoptive children are not their real blood relations. Thus, adopted children do not inherit from their adoptive parents; they inherit from their natural parents. Likewise, adopted children carry their own family name, not the family name of their adoptive parents.

    Re: Adoption

    Response from Islam Q&A.

If a person asks to adopt a child from the orphanage, is it permitted for those in charge to give him what he wants?

    Praise be to Allaah.

Adoption of children is of two types, forbidden and not forbidden.

The forbidden type means adopting a child in the sense that the child is considered to be the child of the adopting parent and subject to the rulings on children. This is not permitted. Allaah nullified it in the Qur’aan when He said (interpretation of the meaning):

“…nor has He made your adopted sons your real sons…”

    [al-Ahzaab 33:4]

The kind which is prescribed and may be mustahabb means being kind towards the child and giving him a righteous religious upbringing and sound direction, teaching him that which will benefit him in this world and the next. But it is not permitted to hand a child over except to one who is known to be trustworthy, religiously-committed and of good character, who will take care of the child’s interests. He should also be a local resident, so that he will not take the child away to a country where his presence may be a cause for his religious commitment being lost in the future. If these conditions are met in the case of both the child and the adopting parent, then it is OK to hand over a foundling whose parentage is not known. May Allaah preserve you

From Fataawa Samaahat al-Shaykh Muhammad ibn Ibraaheem (may Allaah have mercy on him)

    Re: Adoption

you can adopt a child but not give him your name, that is, he/she should be called by their father's name. And nowadays, when you adopt a child in the West (Britain at least) the child will most likely know of his / her birth parents and can even communicate with them, either directly or through a third-party called letterbox contact. So the child will know that you aren't his/her parent and that he/she is adopted.

In Surah Al-Ahzab (Chapter 33, verses 4-5) it is written:

Allah has not made for a man two hearts in his interior. And He has not made your wives whom you declare unlawful your mothers. And he has not made your adopted sons your [true] sons. That is [merely] your saying by your mouths, but Allah says the truth, and He guides to the [right] way.

Call them by [the names of] their fathers; it is more just in the sight of Allah . But if you do not know their fathers - then they are [still] your brothers in religion and those entrusted to you. And there is no blame upon you for that in which you have erred but [only for] what your hearts intended. And ever is Allah Forgiving and Merciful.

So i think these verses show that you can adopt buy you can't call the adopted children your own children. They retain their parent's names, etc.

Yes Muhammed peace be upon him raised an orphan, he himself was an orphan too. Anyone who raises and orphan and does not consume their wealth unjustly nor does any injustice to the orphan shall be close to Muhammed in paradise as your index finger is to the middle finger.

Wow, impressive religion I must say. Never known a religion to handle matters such as adoption and orphans. Being a Muslim seems better and better everyday .

    Chapter 4, verse 2:
And give to the orphans their properties and do not substitute the defective [of your own] for the good [of theirs]. And do not consume their properties into your own. Indeed, that is ever a great sin.

    verse 10:
Indeed, those who devour the property of orphans unjustly are only consuming into their bellies fire. And they will be burned in a Blaze.

Islam deals with everything. There are hadith which command us to be just to animals also among thousands of other things.

Orphans in Islam become the responsibility of the community, it is the duty of every able Muslim to assist them in any way possible, so too the poor person. Islam advises to look at those who are less fortunate that you so that you may be thankful and grateful for what you have. If you instead look at those who have more than you, you become ungrateful and miserable for having less and do not take into consideration the poor and needy who you might be able to help even though you don't have much compared to those who are more wealthy.
