    Ramadanyat (OP)

So how did you spend your first day of Ramadan? and what did you break your fast on?

This day went rather fast (for me) I was sleep deprived for a few days, and though we had guests today I could barely keep my eyes open..
I woke up 15 mins shy of breakfast.. we had a feat but I wasn't very hungry.. to be honest I still want to sleep some more.. it is catching up with me the deprivation of the past two weeks...

we had rotisserie chicken today, some spinach burek?

Mangosteen is extremely juicy, it's like lychees, but while lychees is a bit rubbery, mangosteen flesh is so soft. Basically it's rich man's version of lychees. The smell is very fragrant in nice way, and it's very sweet with enough acidity that cuts through the sweetness, and because it's so juicy and soft, it tastes very fresh and the flesh of the fruit just melts in your mouth.

    From wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Purple_mangosteen
The purple mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana), colloquially known simply as mangosteen, is a tropical evergreen tree believed to have originated in the Sunda Islands and the Moluccas of Indonesia. The tree grows from 7 to 25 m (20–80 ft) tall. The rind (exocarp) of the fruit, which is not edible, is a deep reddish purple when ripe. The fragrant edible flesh that surrounds each seed is botanically endocarp, i.e. the inner layer of the ovary.[1] It is sweet and tangy, juicy, and somewhat fibrous.

    From wikipedia:
The rambutan (11pxLoudspeakersvg 1 - Ramadanyat /ræmˈbtən/; taxonomic name: Nephelium lappaceum) is a medium-sized tropical tree in the family Sapindaceae, and the fruit of this tree. It is native to Indonesia, The Philippines, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, and elsewhere in Southeast Asia, although its precise natural distribution is unknown. It is closely related to several other edible tropical fruits including the Lychee, Longan, and Mamoncillo. It is believed to be native to the Malay Archipelago,[3] from where it spread westwards to Thailand, Burma, Sri Lanka and India; eastwards to Vietnam, the Philippines and Indonesia.[4] The name rambutan is from the Indonesian word rambutan, which literally means hairy caused by the 'hair' that covers this fruit, and is in general use in Indonesian, Filipino, and Malay.[4]

It is better than both, it has no zing just sweet and succulent full of juice, we had plums that same day which I am usually crazy about but they went bad because I neglected them. Those black velvet apricots stand at a hefty 76 calories each and I are half the box that day (I kid you not) .. I think they're also endemic to your part of the world so go to the market place and look for them insha'Allah..

    this is how they're described:
    Seasons/Availability
Black velvet apricots have a brief season during June and July.

    Current Facts
The black velvet apricot is an aprium variety: a cross between a plum and an apricot.

    Description/Taste
Black velvet apricots are similar in size to an apricot. While the flavor is more closely related to an apricot, the texture and flavor are closer to a plum with a high level of acidity and juice. The dark, purple-red skin is soft, fuzzy, and lacks the bitter tang of plum skin, and the small pit contained inside may be easily removed.

I am amused by how many sweet delicious fruits Allah swt has blessed us with yet people still go out buying sugary candy..

    Succulent & Sweet

    Pros: sweet & great flavor
    Cons: more plum than apricot

"More of a plum than an apricot, but absolutely delicious. Tree ripened on purchase. They'll be eaten too fast for storability to be a problem."

    Best apricots I've ever purchased!

"Black Velvet apricots are firm, juicy, and extremely sweet. I was spoiled early by having an apricot tree in my yard. Those apricots were fabulous. I've been searching for years for apricots as good. Store-bought apricots are usually mushy, bland, and insipid. These apricots are everything I want an apricot to be. I hope Costco will continue to stock them!"

    Scrumptious Pluot/Apricot

"Bite one of these dark purple beauties and have a napkin handy. The juice will squirt out and your mouth fills with a sweet hints of the best of apricots and plums mixed together. A lovely orange flesh nestles inside the dark purple skin. Delicious. Keep a napkin handy!"

There are a lot of Pakistani/Indian Muslims at the masjid I go to, so the food is a lot of chicken and rice and very spicy. Fortunately I love spicy food, so it's good to me.

Might go back over there tonight to break my fast, but if not, then tomorrow, surely.

Except for the shrimp part, that looks good.

    I don't like seafood.

    Re: Ramadanyat

    Looks yummy.

We raised some blackeye peas this summer and the variety was 'Queen Anne'. Cowpeas such as this are common in the South. Playing off the 'cow' part of cowpeas, my favorite variety is the 'Holstein' which is black and white like the Holstein cow that is famous for milk production.
