That was when Napoleon went to Egypt and they were fascinated by everything 'oriental' as it happens the french thought us Muslims were still un-evolved, they also thought that the ancient Egyptians were half cats half people or half animal half people because the ancient priests of the Pharaohs wore those masks.. guess it is more telling of their ignorance than our lack of evolution.. Anyhow they proclaim to have painted things as they saw them which is bull first because the licorice drink seller wouldn't sell in a mosque and second because there wouldn't be a boy in his speedo or in this case wrapped towel in the mosque.. they just like to fill in the blanks in a way that feeds their own prejudices ..
Wow, mashallah. Amazing exhibition! I need to go visit this! I love stuff like this. I may be visiting my aunt in Boston next summer so I might make a trip. I went to something similar called 1001 Inventions (showcasing artifacts from the Islamic World) in the London Science Museum I think about 2 years ago. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JZDe9DCx7Wk). But this one will include South Asia as well All the pics look so interesting... I especially like the old mushafs and the armour and the sword... and... pretty much everything. What's the place called?

It is part of their permanent collection now insha'Allah, they've been working on it for 12 yrs

Oops, sorry- typo. I meant How long will they keep the exhibition? I hope they wont sort of close it and re open a new one. But you've just said they've been working on it for 12 years so I don't think they will change it any time soon lol. Good, that leaves me plenty of time to go see it.

my grandmother's old house was like this and the area above was made for storage she called it 'sandarra' I always felt like it was a place for devils to hide, had no idea what she could have possibly had in there or how she even got to it.. her house was very old very very old and spacious and was inhabited by jinn for sure, we used to see them in her antique mirrors walhi all the time.. no one ventured into the 'guest room' if she ever had many visitors sleeping, they'd all rather sleep on the floor or on top of one another like packed anchovies than go to that room

Very cool indeed.. my uncle is an engineer, he makes exactly these kinds of houses, don't know where he gets these artisans from but of course it is very expensive I'd love to have him design me a house like that, with water fountains and large space and arabesque architecture and windows.. I love the smell of wood and marble.. just instantly peaceful and relaxing..

I don't know if it is designed for storage at the metropolitan but in the old houses that's exactly what it was designed for, now it is updated my mom's 'sandarra' is simply wood with those types of light fixtures like this:
no artistry just a wood space overhead with lights and an area you pull down and wooden stairs will unravel I don't know if I am explaining it correctly but the old ones there were no stairs I often wondered how they got there to store things or retrieve them and of course it is very artistically done not mere slaps of woods..

no but close by and the toilet especially is where 'Laza' that is what us kids called her lived, in the atrium behind the arched window.. my grandmother's bathroom was one of those Turkish hole in the ground ones and was equally scary as hell.. I can't even describe it but we never dared look where ['laza' the devil's daughter] lived.. though I was repeatedly threatened to be taken there when I was naughty and I was naughty quite often, my uncle would hoist me on his shoulders and I would beg and plead one time my grandmother threw him out of the house because he had terrified me into hysterics ..
