What is a Mujahid?

If jihad means struggle, and jihad fisabilillah means struggle in the way of Allah, does that mean walking to the mosque with a broken leg is jihad? because you are struggling in the way of Allah?

Jihad is not fighting. Jihad is translated into English as struggle. One can struggle with oneself against one's nafs, how to be a good human being.
The fighters call themselves mujahadeen because they are struggling against oppression.

The literal meaning is: a Muslim engaged in what he considers to be a jihad.

A mujahid is one who struggles for the sake of Allah and Islam. The literal meaning of "Mujahid" is "inner-struggler" and common in Middle Eastern and Southwest Asian names.


Muslims who engage in the defense of Muslim lands, or who take up a struggle in defense of the oppressed, the poor or the exploited, or against the oppression of the state or foreign invaders, consider themselves to be mujahidin. Since 1979, the term has been applied most frequently to Arab and Muslim fighters who took up arms against the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan (1979-1990) and in defense of Muslims in Kashmir, the Balkans and Chechnya. The mujahidin of Afghanistan were financially and militarily supported by the United States and Saudi Arabia. The mujahidin of Kashmir have been (and continue to be) supported by Pakistan.

"Not equal are those believers remaining [at home] - other than the disabled - and the mujahideen, [who strive and fight] in the cause of Allah with their wealth and their lives. Allah has preferred the mujahideen through their wealth and their lives over those who remain [behind], by degrees. And to both Allah has promised the best [reward]. But Allah has preferred the mujahideen over those who remain [behind] with a great reward." (Qur'an 4:95)

"And verily We shall try you till We know those of you who strive hard (Mujahideen) and the steadfast, and till We test your record." (Qur'an 47:31)
