“Beware of pride, for Allaah does not love pride. If a person abuses and reviles you in a matter he knows about you, then do not revile him in a matter you know about him, for then you will have his reward and he will have your sin. Thus, do not revile anyone.”

Shaykh Muhammad al Khurasani رحمه الله commented:
" Know that for every act of injustice issued from a person it is not permissible to confront it with similar injustice. Hence, it is not permissible to confront backbiting with backbiting, and it is not permissible to confront spying with spying, nor abuse with abuse. It is the same for all sinful acts of disobedience."
