    Question Alcohol+medicines=?confusion

    Report bad ads?

well am slightly or a inch confused regarding this issue on the usage of medicines that contain alcohol to cure ones illness...is this appropriate or acceptable in Islam? as alcohol is totally haraam...so can this be used for medication??

it can be found in many medicines.....such as strepsils(sore throat) has cetryl alcohol or imodium( prevents diarrhea's)

secondly most products available in stores such as cream, hand cream, shampoo contains certyl alcohol...meaning a touch of alcohol is used in the products......can this still be used?...as i have doubts and avoid any products containing alcohol and use items without alcohol such as for facial cream..so far found johnsons cream....without alcohol....alhamdulilah...

    soo........help moi inshAllah

To my undertanding, it is allowed in these instances as it is alcohol in a changed form. The form of 'Khamr is forbidden as it is intoxicating.

    And Allah knows best.

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious and Most Merciful.

Where they are made from materials which are haram or najis, so the medicine is haram according to the consensus of the Muslim jurists, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Allah does not put your cure in that which He has forbidden for you.” (Reported by Al-Bukhari)

In his answer to the question "is it permissible to treat disease with alcohol?", Shaykh Al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah (may Allah have mercy on him), said: "Using alcohol for medicinal purpose is haram, as stated by the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). This is the view of the vast majority of scholars. It was reported in As-Sahih that he (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about alcohol that was made for medicinal purposes, and he said: ‘It is a disease, it is not a cure.’ And, in As-Sunan it is reported that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘It is forbidden to treat disease with Khabith (evil) things.’ Ibn Mas`ud said: ‘Allah does not put your cure in that which He has forbidden for you.’ Ibn Hibban reported in his Sahih that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Allah does not put the cure for my Ummah in that which He has forbidden for them.” In As-Sunan it is reported that he (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about frogs which were used for medicinal purposes. He forbade killing them, and said, “Their croaking is tasbih (glorification of Allah).”

    another dilemma...

my mums hand are very dry........proper dry......

we simply cant find any hand products that will prevent the dryness without containing darn alcohol.....

we visited body shop..thinking something without alcohol....darn......nothing is without it....

most employers have stated it has a touch of alcohol....which is alcohol at the end......same as drinking...as a person is rubbing it in his/her skin...which is entering the skin......

it just creates doubts....and rather not be used.....

    Re: Alcohol+medicines=?confusion

there are many different kinds of alcohol the [(ethanol) (ETHOH) CH3CH2OH] form is Haram... some other types aren't even used in medicine.. such as the stuff used in anti-freeze... though believe it or not some people use that to get drunk... they end up with crystals in the urine and with blindness-- but I digress---any organic compound with an (-OH) ending which is a hydroxyl anion is an alcohol... the ethanol form of it is an intoxicant, and you can find alternative forms of medicine. I know in England almost all cough medications have this ethanol in them... YOU DON'T NEED TO BE TAKING THAT... There are alternatives... but we can't label every alcohol as haram since many cells and membranes in your body have this hydroxyl anion (-OH) is in its compositions and is obviously an non-intoxicant ..

You would be applying it, not drinking it. If we are able to wear perfume containing alcohol (most perfumes contain synthetic alcohol) it's okey to use it as medication. If you are to consume it, that should only be done at a last resort.

    Re: Alcohol+medicines=?confusion

We need to talk at length about the issue of perfumes that are said to contain cologne or alcohol. If the percentage of alcohol is very little, we say that it does not matter, and a person may use them without any concern, such as if the alcohol content is 5% or less. This does not matter.

If the percentage of alcohol is very high, so that you can detect it, then it is better not to use it except where it is necessary, such as for sterilizing wounds and the like.

In cases where it is not necessary, it is better not to use it, but we do not say that it is haram. The most we can say is that this high alcohol content is an intoxicant, and no doubt consuming intoxicants is haram according to the texts of Islam and the consensus of the scholars, but is using it in ways other than drinking it permissible? This is open to speculation, but to be on the safe side we should not use it. If you say that it is open to speculation because Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): “O you who believe! Intoxicants, gambling, al-ansaab [animals that are sacrificed on stone altars for idols], and al-azlaam [arrows for seeking luck or decision], are an abomination of Shaytaan's handiwork. So avoid (strictly all) that (abomination) in order that you may be successful. Shaytaan wants only to excite enmity and hatred between you with intoxicants and gambling, and hinder you from the remembrance of Allaah and from al-salaah (the prayer). So will you not then abstain?” [al-Ma'idah 5:90-91], then we look at the general meaning of the phrase So avoid (strictly all) that (abomination), and say that alcohol should be avoided in all cases, whether it is drunk or applied to the skin, or used in some other way. If we look at the reason why, Allaah says, “Shaytaan wants only to excite enmity and hatred between you with intoxicants and gambling, and hinder you from the remembrance of Allaah and from al-salaah (the prayer). So will you not then abstain?” We may understand this to mean that only drinking it is forbidden, because applying it to the skin does not lead to that (enmity and hatred, etc.). So, in conclusion, we say that if the percentange of alcohol in this perfume is low, there is no need to worry about using it, but if it is high, then it is better to avoid it unless it is for a need, such as sterilizing wounds and the like.

    Re: Alcohol+medicines=?confusion

    Two questions from a non-muslim;

Firstly, do the Qur'an and/or Hadith refer to alcohol, or alcoholic drink?

Secondly, surely any reasonable interpretation would only extend to forbidding use of alcohol as an intoxicant? In medicines (and indeed perfume)it is used a solvent, not an intoxicant.

    Re: Alcohol+medicines=?confusion

One of the biggest problems is in English we adopted the Arabic Word Al-Kahal as the Alcohol. However it is a Chemical term and all organic hydroxols are called alcohol. The Drinking intoxicant is Ethanol and in English it would be an Alcohol. However only one Acohol, ethanol meets the Arabic definition of alcohol (Unless you happen to be an Arabic speaking chemist)

This has caused much confusion as all meats and some vegetables do contain glycerin, which is an Alcohol. the only time glycerin is forbidden is when we do not know the source and it may come from non-halal meat.

The above is based strictly on linguistic and chemistry understanding and is not to be considered from the Qur'an or the Ahadith.

obsession with alcohol in food and medicine and confusion

found this, may or may not be on topic
Alcohol is a group of organic compounds, not every type of alcohol is an intoxicant. You'll get more dizzy light-headed if you ate very ripe soft fruits that had fallen off branches of their own accord or have been stored.

"In chemistry, alcohol is a general term for any organic compound in which a hydroxyl group (-OH) is bound to a carbon atom, which in turn is bound to other carbon atoms and further hydrogens. Other alcohols such as propylene glycol and the sugar alcohols may appear in food or beverages regularly, but these alcohols do not make them "alcoholic""

Any alcohol content in soft drinks is going to be similar to what is found naturally in fruit. You don't become drunk from eating normal amounts of fruit, even though it does contain some alcohol. Alcohol is found in tiny amounts in most foods naturally, such as honey, breads, fruits and vegetables etcetera.

Where there is sugars and moisture, alcohol will be there sooner or later

since have discovered strepsil has alcohol that helps sore throat....completely stopped using it....for the love of Allah(swt)..he has given the illness surely he will cure it... ___________
THERE is ia difference between actually knowing something and copy/pasting a "web fatwah" which may or may have not been written by someone who may or may not know how to spell words like science of chemistry let alone know first thing about these subjects

No, it isn't. How can you compare drinking alcohol to using a product externally that contains it?
