    This is for everyone..Agnostics/Atheists/Theists

What is Luck according to u ?

Why is that they say Good Luck..Best of Luck ..etc.. Do u encourage that?
Do u encourage the usage of those words ?
(I didnt mean that you shouldnot wish good things to happen for someone...>> Im asking u ..y cant u say.. may GOD give u good result,..etc....)

When thinking about LUCK ... Y cant people realise GOD instead....?

Let me make it more clear..

Im not sayin that u shouldnot wish good for others...

where does that Good Luck from ..who is making that surprisingly changes...?

    Have u though about that.?

    _______

The main reason for starting this thread is... i find many Thiests ...
..using the words LUCK often..(not at all praisin GOD)...especially... during exam time..interviews time..results time... etc...

Instead of praising/thinking LUCK ... y are they not thinking about GOD...

    _____

I HATE THE USAGE THE WORD "LUCK"

that we hope they will remember the stuff they have studied that they will be able to give the right answers. that there won't be any questions about the stuff they don't remember.. this doesn't preclude praying for god to help them.
"luck" to me, is a very vague concept.

For me if a muslim says best of luck i would take it as a compliment that means May Allah help you succeced. But if a non-muslim says it it's just a normal compliment like good job or like the old inpression break a leg.

Say you are working on the roof, and your ladder falls over. Fortunately, you landed on the comfy shrub instead of the sidewalk...or the opposite, you landed on a thornbush, fell through it and landed head first on the pavement. It is either good luck or bad luck....unless one believes that God is directing your fall...in which case He should get the credit..obviously.

Personally, I don't believe God makes a habit of directing people's unfortunate roofing accidents...just going by the number of people who are injured while roofing in the world. They don't all "deserve" it.

i can understand that you are saying this because you aren't a your not a muslim, but we muslims believe that Allah creates everything and thefore he can control it he writes our destiny and whatever happens it is his will not our lack of concentration or attention. Allah can make us die in a second.

    Re: ~ LuCk ~

I am not much of a believer in luck. All things are a matter of choice. We may not know the outcome in advance, but it was still our choice. Our responsibility is to strive for informed choice, so we know the outcome, before we make the choice.

To me the statement "Good Luck" is just a simply exclamation of wishing a person well. It seems to me that the better choice would be say "May Allaah(swt) grant you.......(whatever, fits the occasion)"

Of course being an old American, "Good Luck" still pop outs of my mouth often.

if i am drunk and get in to a car accident and die - did god cause that? or did i, by being an idiot? if god causes everything, doesn't that mean that we have no responsibility for our choices and our actions?
    i do not know.
i like to think that i am responsible for my choices. god may help me and guide me, but if i choose do to something stupid who can i blame but myself?

That takes it to the concept of free-will. I believe there are coincidences. Human beings have free will and the responsibility of making choices. These choices have cause and effect, some good and some bad.

If by luck folks are referring to probablity, then no, that is not evidence of God.

Play the scenerio enough times and the probabilty will work itself out.

Yes..or on a greater scale what did the people of Aceh do to deserve a tidal wave? Meanwhile, the big US military base on Diego Garcia Island in the middle of the Indian ocean and only about 15 ft above sea level is untouched. What is up with that? It is all about the underwater topography and the shape of the tidal wave. I guess you could say the B-52's crews on Diego Garcia were "lucky", but really the underwater topography had been the way it was for thousands if not millions of years so it had everything to do with physics and nothing to do with luck. There are hundreds of stories about people who chose not to go to work on 9-11 in the WTC for some reason. Most feel "lucky". I can't say I blame them, but on the other hand, what about the many thousands that did go to work. Did God not care about them? Fatalism, as a philosophical or relgious construct helps people cope with difficult situations such as the sudden loss of a loved one or gives them courage when threatened, but I don't buy it. The logical consequence is that we have no free will. If we have no free will then why do have a yearning within ourselves to be in control of our destiny? Who thought up that scheme? What a downer. Why try hard? Why work hard? Why study hard? Why act in a moral fashion?

Cruiously, I find myself agreeing with Purest Ambrosia on this. We make our own destinies, to a large degree. There are limits based on heredity and biology and economic circumstance. One can't simply be the fastest man on Earth by practicing real hard, for example, but it is our duty to do the best we can with what God gave us.

Therefore, when I say "Good luck" I mean simply "I wish you well". In fact, I think I will start using the latter expression more.

Luck is a word closely related to superstition, mysticism and witchcraft. The word is blindly used with assumption towards a good meaning, and has at times replaced the remembrance of God from the tongues of people; an example of this is, "good luck in your exams". Luck is neither encouragement, nor genuine well-wishing. If you want to wish something good for someone; pray for them, ask Allah, don't turn to luck as the solution.
