President Nicolas Sarkozy described the vandalism - the third incident directed at the tombstones in Notre Dame de Lorette in two years - as "abject and revolting".Most of the headstones were daubed with a single letter each, which when read together spelled out anti-Muslim slurs.
The graffiti was described by Mr Sarkozy as "the expression of a repugnant racism directed against the Muslim community of France".
Hundreds of police officers have joined an operation to apprehend the culprits - believed to be neo-Nazis.
Two men with alleged Nazi sympathies are already on trial for a similar incident in April, in which 148 Muslim graves were desecrated.
One had been hung with a pig's head and another daubed with slogans insulting Rachida Dati, France's Justice Minister.
Notre Dame de Lorette is located near the most bloody battlefields of the First World War around the town of Arras in northern France.
Housing the bodies of 40,000 soldiers, the cemetery includes 576 Muslim graves, grouped together and pointing towards Mecca.
With calculated timing, the vandals struck on the eve of the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha, the feast of the sacrifice.
