i just wants to add al-burdah is an interesting word and had various meanings

1- if ur eyes get bigger with some sort of disease called burdah
2 getting fat also called burdah as mention in hadeeth

3- old piece of papes as the one used by pyramid ages
4- burdah also as u mention is piece of clothes thats cover ur body to prevent cold or al bard (like clock)



means goodness or righteousness صلاح

next = Anf

brilliant indeed.. what a marvelous addition you are to our forum .. can you please help me find the original burdah by ka'ab ibn zuhayer's translation in English, the banat so'ad one not the later editions, I'd be most supremely obliged..

used as the meaning of (soft) but the real meaning that hidden is (plant or fruit in its first generation or steps) .. its an old word i don't think any1 could use it nowadays only in books

example for the uses of the word:
غضيض البصر -shy to look
غضيض العود- still young
غضيض الطرف - soft in feelings

معلول = somthing wrong with me(mithgt be love,sick ..etc)
this word is the source of علة and used as a discription for علة
the root word (علة) means :

1-Reason
2-forget 'coz of joy
3- broken to parts

but if u want the exact translation in burdah when ka'ab says :

تجلوا عوارض ذي ظلم إذا ابتسمت = كأنه منهل بالراح معلول

تجلى: تكشف، والعواض: الاسنان، والظلم ماء الاسنان اي صفاؤها وبريقها والراح: الخمر، والنهل: الشرب الأول والعل: الشرب الثاني.

A discription of So'ad(name of a woman) if she smile her teeth will be shown and if water came out of her mouth like when u drink !!

so معلول here means the second drink as a reason of smile

زهاليل plural of زهلول
and means

1- soft in the back...
2- far from evil
3- Heart assured

in the poem Ka'ab describe the middle part his woman body(أقراب)=(خصر) how its white + round + soft in one word (زهاليل)

^it means cochlea as well(may be because of its shell like appearance),that spiral thing in inner ear.once found it in a dictionary,i am dead sure

قوقعة = sea shell correct ,cochlea called that coz of the shape right

العساقيل = السراب = Mirage
originally its a name of fruit in grows in desert but refers to Mirage in desert in some situationtion when its plural as poem refer (kaab bin zuhair poem) :
وقد تلفع بالقور العساقيل
means if the land of black stones covered with mirage

It has been a while bro... I was beginning to wonder if you abandoned the translation of Burdah? lol.. went to an Arabic forum, but all the people there had a difficult time with it.. sob7an Allah so far you seem the only one with an excellent grip on some of those antiquated words..
ليالي = nights

شْـمِليلُ = Fast
as in the poem
حرف أبوها أخوها من مهجنة وعمها خالها قوداء شمليل
حرف =camel
قوداء =has tall neck
and the poem is describing a camel as an unique one that its father is it`s brother at the same time (it mated its mother) and its mother`s brother is its father`s brother at the same time (This conditions produce the best type of camels), it`s pretty fast and its neck is tall.

I ll choose easier word ,I don`t want to complicate members ....LOL.
