The Story On How Islam Reached Malabar (Kerala, South-West India)

Muslim of Malabar who were known as Moplas, is believed to be the first Muslim who live in the India sub-continent and they are among the descents of prophet's companions.
They sailed there with Arab merchants and visited the last king of Kerala who was known as Cheraman Perumazh. He was attracted to Muslims' attitude when they met him thus made him decided to embrace Islam and performing pilgrimage in Mecca.
During his way home, he passed away, near Shehar Moqalla port. Before that, he had sent a letter to the governor of Kadankallur region in 10th H (590 AD) ordering for facilities being provided to Muslims preaching Islam in the kingdom.
When they arrived in the Kerala shore, they received those facilities to preach and teach Islam including a place to build masjid.
Today, the first masjid built in Kadankallur still exist with traditional architecture. There are also other 13 mosques built around Kadankallur. Almost the whole Arakkel dynasty of Kerala embraced Islam.
The pattern of the architecture and the marbles of the mosque was brought by Malik Ben Dinar. The mosque became the proof that it was build in the first year of Hegira, maybe during the reign of Caliph Umar al-Khattab.
Silver coin written with "35 Hegira" possessed by Arakkel family and other written records kept too strengthening the evidence of Islam presence in Kerala during early Hegira years.
Researches of names, place of origin, and other hidden treasures excavated from archeological process tracing the relationship of Malabar coast with Arabs during the lifetime of prophet (pbuh).
Kerala is inhabited by 26 millions people and it is among populated states in India.
The provinces of Kerala coast are famous with port-cities such as Cochin, and Calicut, became a passage with a distance of 600 km stretching from north-south became the entrance for Roman, Arab, Portuguese, and British merchants who sailed there for black pepper which was also called as "black gold" during the first era of Christianity renaissance in Europe.
The strategic geographical location facing wide sea with wind blows straight from Arabian coast to Kerala had determines the development of trading.
The city of Calicut became the historical focus of Kerala history where it has developed ancient traditional relationship with Greece-Roman city-states which were linked through Arabian Sea.
The first Brahmin explorers had brought together with them Sanskrit language into Kerala. The Tamils of Kerala who accepted Sanskrit were known as Chentamezh. Later this people formed a distinct language which is known as Malayalam and now is recognized as the official state language in India.
Recently, golden coin founding had exposed the relationship of Malabar coast with Rome during the 5th and 6th C. In classical literature, especially in the prose form had shown that the first dynasty of Cheran kingdom (Kerala) exported fragrant spices, elephant tusks, monkey, and onion.
The historical background of Kerala and Malabar Island began to change when they face new era of the distance trade when an expedition of Portuguese explorer under Vasco Da Gama arrived there in 1484.
The polite attitude of Keralites and their openness toward foreigners in trade for few centuries had been broken by the tactics and the strategies of trade practiced by Portuguese.
Due to the arrival of Portuguese to the Malabar coast, it became the field of race for European nations controlling the trade of black pepper and getting influences from it.
The Portuguese and the Dutch had managed to monopolize the trade of black pepper in order to chase the Moplas away from the market where previously they had succeed in the spice trade.
Muslim inhabitants live in spotted areas but most of them live in Malappuram province near Malabar coast. There are few mosques, educational institutions and complexes funded by those who live outside the Malayalee coast.
An Islamic preaching council known as Munathul Islam was established in 1900 in Ponni and another one is Islamic Preaching Center which emphasizes on the basic Islamic knowledge to reverts.
Other than that, Muslims too involved in local politics scene through Indian United Indian Muslim League (UIML) which had also taking part in the formation of Pakistan in 1947.
Their 19 representatives were chosen to join the United Democratic Party. One of them is Abu Kadeer Kutty Naka who held the post of Vice Minister of Kerala.
