Salam Alaykum

Lately I have noticed alot of reverts posting about how non-supportive their family/friends have been towards them for becoming muslim.
I would like to share some of my story with you if you do not mind. ( I am not good at writing things down like this so please be patient with me)
I come from a southern baptist background where basically you ask no questions you listen to your pastor because he knows best. My family was very church orientated especially my grandmother.

When my grandmother found out that my mother (a minister) had converted to Islam and that her grandchild (who was 13 at the time) had become muslim she was not supportive at all. My mom and I were basically ostracized from the family for a while but eventually they became use to us being muslim and i guess they started to miss us. It is very important to always pray that your family comes into Islam and embraced it even though they so dislike to your religion, so my mom and I would always pray for them to accept Islam especially my grandmother.

About 5 years later my grandmother fell ill because of her diabetes and had both legs amputated. We thought her health would improve but it didnt it only got worse and she was dying in the hospital.
So on one of our visits my mom started making dua for her to Allah and she started saying shahada (La ilaha illa Allah wa-Muhammad rasul Allah.
There is no god but God and Muhammad is the prophet of God.)
and I was thinking oh no why did my mom say this my grandmother is going to kick her out of the room but my grandmother didnt she turned to my mom and said what are you saying to me and my mom said Im praying to Allah to heal your sickness. My grandmother then started listening to my mother praying (which I though was crazy because she always told us not to bring Islam up around her ). Then all of a sudden she (my grandmother) says La ilah illa Allah wa-Muhammmad rasul Allah and my mom said it to her again and my grandmother continued to repeat after her and then my grandmother said what does this mean and my mom told her and my grandmother just said amen.

If you were to tell me that my grandmother was to say this before she died I would never have believed it. All praise is due to Allah (swt)!!!
So always remember brothers and sisters pray for your family and always have faith in Allah because he will always listen to your prayers.

Subhanallah this story is a great reminder of the power of dua and to never give on praying for someone we love

Subhanallah! Lucky Family! Does the grandma knew that she was saying Shahadah and not just praying for good health.

My mom told her what it meant and she just nodded her head and said amen

Indeed ! Only Allah is able to guide his servants to his right path, all we can do is try to help them understand the truth, and the most important is, to pray Allah for them.

That was a really beautiful story. Jazaki Allahu Khayran for sharing.

Alhumdullillah!!

I'm Albanian and my name is Malik which is an Arabic name but my parents are staunch Orthodox Christians. Telling them my religion would cause serious implications for me.

But as I always say, "God Good!!" Any persecution we face in this world, insha allah we will be compensated in the next for it. They always say the more tests some one faces, the greater their reward in the here after insha allah! So we strive for less persecution but if it happens we should not fret, rather we should see it as a blessing in disguise! and Allah knows best!

that is so true bro

“Whatever befalls a Muslim of physical weakness or complaint or worry or distress or harm or even a thorn in his finger, is used by Allah to erase some of his sins.” (related by Al-Bukhari, Muslim and others)

Allah is so merciful

Indeed, Allah(swt) is sooo merciful!

When I first reverted to Islam I faced many hardships as any one would. But I would often times wake up unhappy. But then I started hearing Hadith like the one you quoted and now I wake up with a smile on my face every morning! Sure, we should fear the wrath of Allah(swt) as the Prophet(saws) did. But we should also understand the mercy and love and compassion of Allah swt and this should always give us hope!

^ If you do no mind my asking
you are the only muslim in your family?

Yes I am the only one!! :( My family would never revert to Islam no matter how hard I tried. They are too hard headed lol!

lol just pray to Allah
because I said the same about my grandmother
I will make dua also

salaam
If i were to revert... then i would also be the only muslim in my family.. my mother may agree that many areas of islam "make sense" she is a staunch atheist... to the point where she never even went to hear me sing when i was at the catholic parish.. not even just to support me. Which always has saddened me. I am here to learn, I am still in the stage of thinking about thinking about reverting and i know i have oh so much to learn but stories such as yours warm my heart so much.
Thank you very much - your story is a powerful one and I would guess, not just for those in my place ...
