Dealing with Teenage Muslim Brothers and Sisters Help Plz !

Apart from my full time work i have a few weekends and weekdays where i work for my local Council Library and Community service in West London. I've recently been transferred to a library with a catchment area with a heavily Ethnic area which is fine. The majority is Muslim alhamdulillah but many are Somalian which is no problem however the teenagers in particularly Somalian Sisters and Brothers cause alot of anti-social behaviour in the library after school hours. I don't mean to signalise them but I've been stopping Muslim Sister fighting another girl, they've hurled abuse, showed little respect to others especially being rude to their elders and the library equipment. The trouble doesn't seem to stop we've had the police called as they began to threaten staff we had a few brothers arrested on disturbing the peace. I've also banned alot of the sisters from the premise however since its a council and public service its pretty hard to get them banned and lengthy process.

The hardest part is when we do ban them they come back within a few hours however since the sisters are in big groups its hard to distinguish the good from the bad since they where hijabs etc. I find myself at whits ends when they argue back and sometimes i just want to shout out your disgracing Muslim sisters and brothers and bringing shame on yourself but they are so wound up in trying to be " bad girl /boy" they probably laugh it off or something.... I'm finding it hard to relate and control them i don't want to be a tyrant and have complete silence but there needs to be some sort of order they show little respect to others around them eating and leaving rubbish around the library and just messing around stealing from the counter the list is endless to what type of misbehaviour and intimidation the brothers and sisters get up to.

Any ideas apart from banning every single teenager from the library......its literally getting to that point, most days its pretty ridiculous to keep calling the Police when they just begin to spin out of control and cause trouble in the Library, so much they can do and Community Liaisons are not helping to ease the problem every time we get the Community Officers we all know they won't respect them. If i had it my way i smack and beat every one of those children till they showed respect but i can't do that or i'll lose my job ;D.

Do they not have library cards in order to enter or be able to access library services in the first place? If they act in an improper manner then their cards should be confuscated.

The library should start only letting teenagers in who swipe or show their cards before entry. That way if they misbehave then they can be firstly warned and threatened with a ban if they continue to behave in such a manner and that they will have their cards confuscated. If they continue to act in such a way then their cards should be confuscated and it should be noted on the system so they are not allowed to join again until a certain time perioud or even indefinatley depending on the severity of their behaviour.

Unfortunately councils are Publicly Owned therefore anyone can walk in and out there is no barriers or security within the Library itself they are free to roam, we've banned them and even the Police have contacted there parents but we still end up with alot of Anti-social behaviour, i wish at times that the Mosque which is about 2min walk from would intervene but I'm not quite sure whether they'd be prepared to help us :S.

What you are describing is sadly getting to be very common among all teenagers. When I was living in Texas one solution for public places and convenience stores was for public places to limit the number of teens permitted to be in the place at one time. It seemed to help in Texas anyhow.

Asalaamu Alaikum, Banning them will never resolve anything. They need something to do. A community centre which would get our young brothers and sisters involved in Islamic activities, local community projects, Islamic learning circles and sports activities etc would be a perfect way to steer our teens away from trouble and doing something worthwhile.

They need to be steered and guided towards that direction otherwise out of sheer boredom and nothing else to do then they will end up wasting their time and getting into mischief. So we need sisters out there to set up these Islamic circles for sisters and give them dawah and invite them to join such a circle or group so that they may involve themselves in good and not i trouble or waste their time doing mischief.
