Why can a man have four wives?

Why in Islam can a man have four wifes? I don't have problems or issues with polygamy, but why can a man have so many wife's if they wish too? Some western-countries and people nowadays go crazy over this.

Islam limited the number of wives a man can have.. look in the bible for how many wives & concubines David, or Solomon etc had..
in the west they can go crazy all they want. They don't have a problem for instance with Micheal Gambon having two children out of wedlock with his mistress with his wife's blessings and yet assigning him a gay character on Harry potter.. They're just hypocrites..
This is a solution that many women are happy with, many others aren't so.. I think a wife has a right to know.. It is also better than cheating, mistresses and Bast*rd children and a humane project that some many take on.
I wouldn't personally accept it, divorce is always an option.. someone else wouldn't have a problem, my uncle divorced his wife, married a much younger woman everyone in the family hated him for it, then he remarried his first wife again though things were them were always broken.. he was (yes he passed away may Allah yer7amo) the sort of man who loved women and I didn't have much respect for the things he and his four boys did but I think it is better he does it in a halal fashion than go on cheating and having basta*d children...

Yes, this is true, but I wonder why they are so accepting of fornication and adultery. You can hardly watch TV or movie without multiple examples of zina. Adultery is called only 'having an affair' or an 'indiscretion' and fornicating teenagers are only 'hooking up' for a one night stand. I am married to only one woman, but I can easily imagine some of the difficulties of having more than one wife. I rather think it would take an exceptional man to be able to juggle life with even two wives let alone four. However, under extreme conditions where women have difficulty finding a responsible man to marry such as after a major war, I can see the benefits of the allowance for 4 wives in Islam. Just imagine the inverse of the situation that currently exists in both India and China where men greatly outnumber women due to sex-selective abortions. I recently read that there is a deficiency of 40 million women in India alone. Now the situation of a woman having multiple husbands presents the unique problem of not knowing who was the father of her children.

actually, marriage is a useless custom in an godless world. So these upset Western people should shut themselves up and look at their hypocrisy before pointing fingers at others. All living beings love sex in one way or another. God allowed male humans to marry 4 females, while also allowing to establish a spiritual relationship with them, what's so upsetting about that?

Having a stash of porno under an adult's bed is acceptable but him enjoying halaal things is not? Stupidity has no limits in "Western people."
 
lol, that's funny and disgusting at the same time, how some of them tut tut at the though of marrying more than one woman, then have piggism with ten or 50 or an unlimited umber of them on video and then sell it for profit,....... oh yes, and the government wants a cut aswell!
 
May ALLAH guide us all. this is only allowed when a man can help women or support his family. the purpose of having 4 wives are neat but now a days it take some other form... :phew
 
The purpose of marriage in Islam is to build a Muslim family which the husband, the wife/wifes, and the kids love each other, feel happy, and InshaAllah, blessed by Allah.

If a man can build a family like this with more than one wife, why not?. There are some men who could build a happy polygamy marriage. I have meet one of them, he's a businessman, a religious Muslim.

But if marry more than one wife will cause the wives hate each other, it's better if this man marry only one wife.

Polygamy is a privilege that given to Muslim men, but unfortunately this is the privilege that commonly misused by men who actually not competent to marry more than one wife, and do polygamy only to follow their lust. Mostly of polygamy marriage are committed by bad Muslim like them.

They marry new wife after attracted to her, then neglect his old wife/wives. And when other people ask "why you did it?", they answer "What's wrong? Islam allow man like me to marry four wives"

No wonder if other people are thinking, Islam is religion that oppress women.

I agree with some brothers who say, Islam has a bad image not because other people make this bad image, but because Muslims themselves created this bad image.

This is why say women in the West are brainwashed, that they can't see the exploitation of women.
 
I'm not looking for flaws in the Qur'aan, I just want to be able to understand better.

For some reason I've had the understanding the wives need to be treated equally, is this true or not? How to explain 4:3 and 4:129?

Does equal refer strictly to rights or other things?
 
Nowadays western-people might find it odd and awkward, but what about gays and lesbians, and have you seen celebrities? Half of celebrities get married and divorced around 10 times, so why not just have 4 wives.

However I do think it would be good to tell the first wife you want another and make sure both wives agree like this the family would live happily....and like above person mentioned not hate each other.
 
^^^life is complicated pbg especially feelings and emotions. Its really about adapting, getting used to and have the best kind of manners. and who has all of that? very very very small percentage. if they can't even deal conflicts at work, family or friends...then marriage would be the same too.

Assalamualaikum

"Equal" is not always means "same". If a man has two wives which the first wife give him three kids and the second wife give him one kid. It's okay if the husband give money in bigger amount to the first wife than the second wife, because three kids need more money than one kid.

"And if you fear that you will not deal justly with the orphan girls, then marry those that please you of [other] women, two or three or four. But if you fear that you will not be just, then [marry only] one or those your right hand possesses. That is more suitable that you may not incline [to injustice]"
(An-Nisa: 4)
This is a reminder for men. If they can not be fair if they have more than one wife, they just marry one wife only.

"And you will never be able to be equal [in feeling] between wives, even if you should strive [to do so]. So do not incline completely [toward one] and leave another hanging. And if you amend [your affairs] and fear Allah - then indeed, Allah is ever Forgiving and Merciful"
(An-Nisa: 129)
A common mistake that committed by men who married more than one wife. They love one of them so much, give her everything, but neglect other wives and even let them in financial trouble.

This ayaah is a reminder for men too. Do not do this mistake.
