Shia Muslims do not adhere to the Quran and Sunnah. They adopt different cultures, and other religious/superstitious beliefs and practices into the religion.

It is because the shias made up their own group - so, in order to distinguish ourselves as the followers of the sunnah of Prophet(saws) - we call ourselves as sunnis - because the ideology of shias is Not Islam; so its just a precaution to distinguish ourselves. and.. calling ourselves as just a muslim is perfectly fine.

Next; here's most Sunni opinion of the different sects and division:

We should reject division and deviation and cling to the Qur'an and the Sunnah.

30:31-32. (Always) Turning in repentance to Him (only), and be afraid and dutiful to Him; and perform As Salât (Iqâmat as Salât) and be not of Al*Mushrikûn (the disbelievers in the Oneness of Allah, polytheists, idolaters, etc.).

Of those who split up their religion (i.e. who left the true Islâmic Monotheism), and became sects, [i.e. they invented new things in the religion (Bid'ah), and followed their vain desires], each sect rejoicing in that which is with it.

To conclude, when I am at the masjid praying beside the muslim brothers, I notice that they pray namaaz differently than I was taught to by my family. They may raise their hands before changing positions, their hands aren't positioned as mine are, and they may make dua' with their hands far away from one another.

But the thing is; they along with me and you are Muslims. It doesn't matter how they pray, but who they pray to. We all pray to Allah Subhanahuwatallah. We all follow the commandments of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) according to the hadith. And we follow the pillars of Islam (fasting during Ramadan, etc.) That is all that matters. We are all muslims and we shouldn't let divisions stir us away from our brothers in Islam.

It would be a shame if all the different sects of Islam went to the mosque and all prayed to different Imams in different areas of the masjid.

Working backwards. The Madhabs (Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi, Hambali) are the 4 schools of Islamic Jurisprudence (Sharia) accepted as valid by Sunni. A person or Nation is to accept any one of the 4 (Anly one, but if one is accepted it must be followed in it's entirety no picking and choosing Just the parts one likes. These deal primarily with the legal codes of a nation and should be which ever is most adaptable to a specific Nations. Although they do have differences, they are not seperate denominations or sect.

While there are sects, denominations and divisions in Islam the vast Majority (80 to 90%) of us are Sunni. We do not recognize any sects and see all Muslims as being Muslim with no adjective needed or appropriate.

There are 2 other groups that are often thought of as being sects. Sufi and Shi'ite. Sufi'ism is a mystical aspect of Islam. Not necessarily a seperate group. Some perhaps many Sufi are Sunni. although many of us feel some of their practices are inappropriate, but that does not necessarily remove them from Islam. there are some Sufi that are not Muslim and see Sufi'ism as a way of life not worship, they have a strong resemblance to Buddhism

Shi'ite are a bit more difficult to explain. It is basically a matter of opinion as to if the Family of Muhammad(saws) should be the leaders of all Muslims.

What adds to the confusion there are a large number of groups that have many similarities to Islam. But are not considered to be following Islam

Baha'i
Sikh
Druze
Yazidi

and others. In a few cases they call themselves Muslim. They are not sects of Islam and have no relationship to Islam.

From where the madhab came from?.

In the past when Rasulullah Muhammad (saw) was still alive, people learned Islam directly from him. But after Rasulullah (saw) passed away, people could not learn directly from him, but must learn from sahaba. After the sahaba passed away, people learned Islam from Imam who expert in Fiqh such as Imam Abu Hanifa, Imam Shafi'i, Imam Malik, Imam Ahmad. Then those Imam students teach fiqh to next generations same as fiqh that had taught by the those Imam. The lesson about Fiqh (thought) from those Imam which taught from generation to generation evolved into School of Thought in Islam which now we know it as Madhab al Fiqh.

the salaf were the close companions of the prophet pbuh...

...today we have what I term the neo salafi movement, which is quite rigid. it's very strange how they've termed themselves "salaf" though I don't have a problem with that, except for their rather militant portrayal of Islam.

Barring that noise bro Bilalkid, all this is really not that important... in the times we live in, if we go about investigating every single sect, we'd be forever chasing ghosts that are elusive, if you know what I mean.

Asalaam O Alaikum...

The Quran and Hadith informs us in Simple Terms who are The Successful (Muflihoon):

Allah (swt) informs us in Surah Baqara (Verses 1-5) says who are Successful:

This is the Book about which there is no doubt, a guidance for those conscious of Allah

Who believe in the unseen, establish prayer, and spend out of what We have provided for them,

And who believe in what has been revealed to you, [O Muhammad], and what was revealed before you, and of the Hereafter they are certain [in faith].

Those are upon

guidance from their Lord, and it is those who are the successful.​

The Blessed Prophet (saw) informs us who are Successful:

Narrated Talha bin 'Ubaidullah: A man from Najd with unkempt hair came to Allah's Apostle and we heard his loud voice but could not understand what he was saying, till he came near and then we came to know that he was asking about Islam. Allah's Apostle said, "You have to offer prayers perfectly five times in a day and night (24 hours)." The man asked, "Is there any more (praying)?" Allah's Apostle replied, "No, but if you want to offer the Nawafil prayers (you can)." Allah's Apostle further said to him: "You have to observe fasts during the month of Ramad, an." The man asked, "Is there any more fasting?" Allah's Apostle replied, "No, but if you want to observe the Nawafil fasts (you can.)" Then Allah's Apostle further said to him, "You have to pay the Zakat (obligatory charity)." The man asked, "Is there any thing other than the Zakat for me to pay?" Allah's Apostle replied, "No, unless you want to give alms of your own." And then that man retreated saying, "By Allah! I will neither do less nor more than this." Allah's Apostle said, "If what he said is true, then he will be successful (i.e. he will be granted Paradise)." (Bukhari)


Whether one is a Sunni, Sufi or Shia , as long as they do all the above, they will be successful.

It is very easy to go wrong when you are not learned in religion (Quran and Sunnah). Knowing Quran and Sunnah well will keep you from going astray toward extremest views. You'll know how the Prophet (SAW) acted in all occasions and so will be able to tell what is the correct view (and correct application of a Quran verse or hadith) and what is a deviant view.
The Prophet (SAW) said he was leaving behind two things - so long as we held on to them, we wouldn't go astray. Those two things are the Quran and the Sunnah of the Prophet (SAW).

Before I answer your question, I will tell you about "Manhaj as-Salaf".

Manhaj is methodology, or in exactly, methodology in follow Islam. While Salaf means predecessor, or the early generation of Muslims, like sahaba, tabi'in and tabi tabi'in. So, Manhaj as-Salaf is methodology of follow Islam that refer to methodology of early generation of Muslims in follow Islam.

And what is Salafi?. This is a term that created by some people to claim themselves as follower of Manhaj as-Salaf.

But bro, one thing you must know. Not every Muslim who call himself Salafi really follow Manhaj as-Salaf. And not every Muslim who really follow Manhaj as-Salaf call himself Salafi.
