Out of boredom, and also to see if me and that girl from my childhood were compatible (and in the past, other girls), I dabbled in numerology.
Here's how it works.....each number is assigned a mystical meaning, and numbers are assigned to your birthday and name....
ill give you an example....i got excited because both me and one girl have the same birthday....(march 3, 1999)....that makes the birthday 3/3/1999 3+3=6, and 9+9+9+1=28 2+8=10, cross out the 0, you get a 1, 6+1=7.....so our personality is based on the number 7....
and for names, the letters are assigned a digit, like a=1, b=2, etc. you add them together in each name and simplify the digits, and add the 2 or digits together and find a number after simplifying, and find the number that corresponds to your personality......part of the reason I believed in this was because my father seems to believe somewhat in astrology, but only at the surface, like, if you were born on march 3 you have a certain personality, etc. but not to predict the future, as he considers that shirk.....he claims he did not get along with my mother and had to divorce her because of personality differences due to her being a capricorn and him being a scorpio....i also asked some other muslims i know in the turkish community, and they said, "if the astrology is based on the quran, then it is okay..." i presume they said this because they were sufis....
i know this is probably shirk, but how bad is it? and how do I avoid this?

Al-Bukhaari said in his Saheeh: Qutaadah said: “Allaah created these stars for three purposes: to adorn the heavens, to stone the devils and as signs by which to navigate. Whoever seeks anything else in them is mistaken and does not benefit from them, and he is wasting his time and effort in seeking something of which he has no knowledge.” (Saheeh al-Bukhaari, Baab fi’l-Nujoom, 2/240)

Belief in astrology, numerology, palmistry or anything of the sort that claims to determine your fate or future is shirk and haram.

:salam:

Only Allah knows the future, none else. Only Allah knows your fate (when you die, what will happen to you years from now or tommorrow (you can think and predict, however, only Allah has the certain knowledge of the future) only Allah has knowledge of that, in Truth)

It is meaningless to search for signs based on your age and her age, etc. As muslims we believe in QADR, which means, whatever happens, is willed by Allah, written in a book by Allah (Allah commanded the pen).. etc.

And Allah :swt: knows best.

but I'm not predicting the future....im just seeing what our alleged personalities are according to astrology and numerology....does that also count as shirk? I was told by my aunt, who used to be a theology teacher in turkey, that using zodiac signs to determine personality is not shirk, but using them to predict the future is....

Astrology and numerology is shirk. Since numerology and astrology is based on the false belief that astrology and numerology "determines" your personality, while Allah created you.

Allahu alam.
