Are fortune cookies haram?

I bought a box from the supermarket. I like the actual cookies, and.dont obviously believe in the "fortunes", i just find them funny and dumb.

Not an easy question sis...
İ would say...first of all...whether you believe in them or not...we muslims should be and act as role models to other people.
What if someone witnessed you buying and eating a fortune cookie and reading the message in it? He might get the impression that we muslims believe in that stuff.
Besides...this is a similar situation as if you were working in a pig slaughterhouse...would it be halal to work there as a muslim? Obviously, you do not consume pork...you just happen to work there...would that be acceptable?
İ doubt that...i think the same with fortune cookies.

this analogy doesn't apply unless she was working in the cookie factory and putting those slips within the cookies.

while everything in Islam comes down to intentions, our actions also play a role. For example, if you order a meal or something and they gave you a fortune cookie every time then that's fine because it's just a cookie you are eating and don't believe in the message in it. But if you are specifically buying those cookies, then 1. you don't believe in the fortune telling and buy it to eat it only but 2. by buying those cookies, you support that business and help them continue to make fortune cookies that people would read and believe in. So I wouldn't feel comfortable supporting them in that sense.

personally, i hate those cookies, too hard and tasteless.

So really haram? No, i do not think so...but not really good either. İ hate those cookies too.
 
Just think those "fortune telling papers" are some trash, throw them away and eat cookies. You bought cookies, not future predictions. Why to make life too complicated?

P.S. Hopely they were yummy.
 
I have never thought about that but it just came to my mind when I read this. We have fortune telling gums and these are very famous and some times you can only find them in a kiosk. So altgough I dont specifically request from it, the seller gives it. I throw the paper away and just chew the gum. What do you think? I think it is obvious that such production is not Islamic but it is a lil bit complicated when it comes to consumer point.

They are not that yummy...rather tasteless. Like anatolian says...the production is not islamic...but to say it is haram to consume? That is a bit too much

That´s a matter of taste. And if you like to think so, it´s nothing else than a cookie (made by wheat flour, sugar, water and some other ingredients) - but of course maybe cookies in general aren´t islamic products.

Plus then there is that piece of paper - manufacturer added it because he thinks it increasing the selling of the cookies when he calls those few lines of text as fortune. :hiding:
 
Interesting discussion with various views. I think if there is a temptation (which will affect your emaan) to read the piece of paper then don't buy it. However, personally never had these but I did however see and attained various products with the values of the producer/s being clearly established. The product itself wasn't haram or harmful in anyway and I'd think that to investigate many businesses previously and determine what is being supported from their incomes or knowing their beliefs might be tiresome, obviously some products are clearly banned after it has been publicly known to be Anti-Islam. Maybe in the future we will have Islamic reminders in papers stucked in cookies. ;)

Asalaamualykum -

The fortune cookies would only be regarded Haraam if :

a) The paper in itself releases a substance into the cookie that has a haraam ingredient. Even if the paper itself has a haraam element to it chemically the fact that it is attached to the cookie will nullify the cookie and make it haraam.

b) A person reads the fortune cookie (Despite the intent) : There is a Hadith that indicates that to even consider or enquire from Soothsayers in jest is Haraam.

A person who purchases the fortune cookie and throws away the paper - That won't be Haraam as he/she is dispensing of the paper immediately.

Note: If someone where to consider that the fortune cookie becomes Haraam just based on the fact of the paper inside - then that would mean we would have to equally investigate the outside wrapping and logos, pictures Etc of nearly every product in the world. In other words - a Halaal chocolate with a wrapping of a say a Mans picture on it will equally have to be considered Haraam. That will then mean most products in the world will become Haraam based on that principle.

Juridically Yes you can eat it

Frome a point of Taqwa - dont eat based on the fact that you could fall prey to the fortune telling paper.
