Yesterday I visited a friend. He was busy installing the latest Antivirus software as he does online banking etc.

I made us both a cup of coffee and whist he was installing the software, he was going on about how important it is especially that he does online banking.

After he finished, we sat having some bites (and another cup of coffee !!) and started talking about deen. Discussing a certain topic I said something and he disagreed ( very respectfully as we are very good understanding friends). So we both got a bit doubtful about our own positions and information (as humans would in hearing another version). So he said wait "lets check the info out" and I said "ok".

He whipped out his phone, straight onto google and hit onto a website. Then he read something out to me and i was like "wow".

1. I then asked him what website it was and he needed to look back into the phone.
2. I asked him if he read the "About" tab that is normally on a page - He said No
3. I asked him if any Ulema who chains all the way back to the Salaf, were listed on that page - He said he did not look.
4. I asked him if he even knows anything about the page at all - He said No.

Unfortunately - This is how cheap our deen has become. When it comes to money, we do every research and take every precaution (of every security measure) so that we don't get robbed.

How ironical that we don't apply the same or even greater of a measure when it comes to Islamic Information.

May Allah SWT have mercy on our souls.

I do not know you, neither your friend, but...
People have verious degrees of knowledge on different subjects and interesses.

Your friend may be a software expert. He may know everything about virus software and security and so, but he may not know anything how to look up or verify a hadeeth.
That is where you come in as a friend with a different look on life, with a different set of expertises and knowledge and you should inform your friend how he should do that properly.
in return, he can help you get the best and latest anti virus software etc.

Nothing wrong with that.

No one is a specialist in everything.
I suck at accountancy, bookkeeping and social stuff, but I am pretty good with math, electricity and physics for example...and I know that.

So it doesn't automatically mean that your friend "don't apply the same or even greater of a measure when it comes to Islamic Information."
He simply might not know how to do that and he needs to be informed.

Again, this is just an assumptionon my side...I do not know your friend.

The point being about the generality of the situation, no specific attack on the friend. Obviously, I have explained it to him thereafter with much love and patience.

I understood the point you were making. however, the example you mentioned might not have anything to do with that.

The world has been changed a lot. Generations before us, didn't have google, they didn't have access on loads and loads of information within a few seconds. people had to call a carpenter when they needed a new doorframe. they had to go to a mechanic when their car broke down.

nowadays, you can watch a few youtube video's and if you do not have two left hands, you can do a lot of those chores yourself...if it is not too complicated of course.

I was able to do stuff I have never done before with the help of just google.

What I am saying is this.

About deen, you had to rely on an expert in the past. nowadays, you can find a lot of information on the internet, but to be able to do that properly, you need to develop a new set of skills:
-skills how to find the needed information, where to look
-skills how to filter out the useful information
-skills how to find out the authenticity of it
-etc.

not everyone can do that, and therefore they might get misinformed etc.
This is not an attack an you or your friend, don't get me wrong, but I'm trying to say, that you cannot expect from everyone to properly develop these skills.
