Salam,
Can anyone give a rough guideline as to how long it can take to learn Arabic, in terms of speaking and writing [perhaps to an intermediate level]. I can read it, but not understand.

When I was in the military, I was initially assigned to North Africa. I was put in a crash language course and learned sufficient skills to read and carry on sensible conversations in less then 3 weeks. That was a total submersion teaching method that the military uses. One problem with that type of tearning is there is very little long term retention.

Now to learn and retain proper Arabic, you should think of that in terms of several years.

To become truly proficient in Qur'anic Arabic is a life long endeavor

Salamalikum

I am not sure but over here in canada there are few schools that teach Quranic arabic in 6 months or a year to speak, read, and write. You just have to be willing to learn atleast spend 30 hours a week trying to learn.

salaam could u please tell me if u can learn arabic online pls

It is possible to learn good conversational Arabic online in 3 or 4 months following the links that were posted in this thread.

I really have difficulty in understanding how a person can learn Qur'anic Arabic in just 6 months. To read and understand it yes, but not to recite it. I can not see how a person could read it aloud with tajweed without a long time studying voice lessons. That is like saying an Opera singer can learn to sing a classical opera in 6 months

There are many excellent online sites along with a few nice downloadable programs. Some of my favorite sites:

http://i-cias.com/babel/arabic/

http://www.arab2.com/learn-arabic/

a very good purchased course is BYKI. Low cost for what you get with it.
The free version is helpful. The full version is very good. Costs about 60 dollars

http://www.byki.com/free_lang_software.pl

Thank's uncle woody for this site's, I appreciate it alot. (I am trying to learn)

Salam.

Jazakhallah Khair Islamicboy for your links - I thought http://www.fatwa-online.com/downloads/dow002/index.htm was really useful.

also Jazakhallah Khair to Woodrow- I downloaded the free software so now I will try it out!

If that is the BYKI program. Be patient and after a few weeks the company will send you an E-mail offer to buy the full version at less then half price. I ended up getting it for my grandson.

For some reason right now with the paid programs I see, the prices for Arabic language courses are much higher then for any other language. I doubt if it because of the complexity of the language as even the Chinese and Japanese courses are much lower cost and both have a more complex writing system.

I am currently trying to learn Arabic, but am having trouble because I need to hear proper pronunciations. know a site with sound.

i am convinced that an adult would find it almost impossible to learn to speak arabic with no accent. cool language tho.
