Sikhism

do u carry a sword wid u all da time?!!! :uhwhat

Yes i sure do like millions of other Sikhs! It's essential for a baptised Sikh to wear it on one's person. And yes it's legal. Sikhs are completely protected against prosecution for carrying a kirpan (Ceremonial Sword)!

Here's what it looks like! - Although mine is 16 inches long

wha if the person dont..? then itl go on 4eva n eva.. hmmm.. okeh ^o)

Well if each time you're born, and you endure life's difficulties even worse than the previous time, wouldn't you then think, 'If i attach myself to the Lords name, i won't endure this any longer' It's quite simple, if you begin to understand it

I find it difficult to see how you think someone disable is being punished for something they did in a previous life, or a disabled baby born deformed, how he is supposed to have done something bad in a previous life

Do sikhs only marry sikhs or is it permitted for them to marry from other religions?

As far as i know, we can marry out of the faith, but as long as we don't give up or convert to the others faith. But culturally it's best to marry within one's own religion! The largest non-asian Sikh community can be found in Espanola in the USA. http://www.flickr.com/photos/mrsikhnet/222214213/

They are married to non Sikhs but they themselves choose to follow the Sikh path and the partner may choose to follow in the footsteps!

Do sects exist within the Sikh religion? If so, what are the main ones?

Like many religions unforuntaley they do! Namdhari are the ones that believe in a 'living Guru' whom they worship as Guru Nanak which is ludicrous!! Radha Swamis a,d the Nirnakaris are the main breakaway sects!

Greetings AvarAllahNoor,

Thanks for the answer.

You might find my next question a little bizarre, but recently I heard that Sikhs were forbidden from earting halal meat, is this true? Or is this applicable to only certain sects within the sikh religion? If it is true, why is it forbidden?

Kind regards.

Well this is a longwinded answer, but neccesary to help you understand it better!

Many people have argued about wheather Sikhs are allowed to eat meat or not! So in the Guru Granth Sahib it states the following so one could assume that meat consumtion is up to one's own self!

Only a fool argues whether to eat meat or not. Who can define what is meat and what is not meat? Who knows where the sin lies, being a vegetarian or a non vegetarian? ((Guru Granth Sahib) Page 1289)

Okay, some people say Sikhs who have been initiated into the order of the Khalsa (pure ones) by the Amrit ceremony are strictly forbidden to eat any type of meat or meat products. So that would be me. I don't eat meat, because i feel that God has given life to this creature so who am i to kill and consume an animal just for my need to eat meat, when i can find a million other things that are non-meat!

Kabeer, the dinner of beans and rice is excellent, if it is flavoured with salt. Who would cut his throat, to have meat with his bread? (Guru Granth Sahib Ji)

“Make virtue your bread, good conduct the ghee, and modesty the meat to eat. As Gurmukh, these are obtained, O Nanak; partaking of them, one`s sins depart.” (Siri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, page 553)

Now onto Halal meat - The Gurus neither advocate meat nor banned its use. They left it to the choice of the individual. There are passages against meat, in the Adi Granth. Guru Gobind Singh however prohibited for the Khalsa the use of Halal or Kutha meat prepared in the Muslim ritualistic way.

Reson fo that is, Halal meat is done under the reading of the Kuran (where you ask forgiveness of God that you are about to kill his creature) To a sikh that would be, why ask forgiveness for killing an animal over and over again if you continue to kill it?! - In Sikhism eating halal meat is prohibited. Sikhism rejects the killing of any animal by evoking a prayer or by slow death as this causes it far too much pain.

So basically.... A vegetarian diet has been deemed as consensually (consensus or Gurmatta is a Sikh tradition) acceptable to all. The Rehat Maryada (Sikh Code Of Conduct) does not ban the consumption of meat. It does however state that "Eating the meat of an animal slaughtered the Muslim way;" is strictly prohibited.[1] This applies not only to Halal, but any ritually slaughtered meat, including Kosher. The Hukamnama issued by the Akal Takht stated that meat killed in the Jhatka fashion (one blow, or as painlessly as possible) is the only meat that should be consumed by a Sikh.[2] There are however some fringe Sikh groups who advocate a strict vegetarian life style.5].

yea but why would we have teeth that are specifically for meat? I mean vegetarians say they dont eat meat cuz they r living things. But so are plants, they can cry and feel. so0o theyre must be a better reason? lol.

Hi again,

Thanks for the answer.

There are a few points which I would like to address though.
Halal meat is done under the reading of the Kuran (where you ask forgiveness of God that you are about to kill his creature) To a sikh that would be, why ask forgiveness for killing an animal over and over again if you continue to kill it?!
Can I ask for a reference for that? Islam allows us to slaughter animals and eat them, so why would we ask forgiveness for something which our Lord has permitted us to do?

In Sikhism eating halal meat is prohibited. Sikhism rejects the killing of any animal by evoking a prayer or by slow death as this causes it far too much pain.
Have you ever witnessed a Muslim slaughtering an animal? It's not a slow process, I'll post more on this later.

The reason I asked about the Halal meat issue, is because of what I saw on this site.

In general Sikhism has adopted an ambivalent attitude towards meat eating as against vegetarianism. But if meat is to be taken at all, Guru Gobind Singh enjoined on the Khalsa Panth not to take kosher meat ie. Halal meat slaughtered and prepared for eating according to the Islamic practice. In fact it is one of the kurahits for every amritdhari Sikh. One who infringes it becomes patit (apostate).
You mentioned that it is strictly prohibited, but is that sikh also an apostate if he eats halal meat?

Regards.

How many plants do you see running around like animals?

Plus this is what is said by muslims saints in the Guru Granth Sahib ji!

Jo Sabh Meh Ek Khudai Kahat Ho,To Kio Murghi Maarey" (pg. 1350)

If you consider God is in all, then why do you slaughter the chicken (i.e., life?)

"Rojaa Dharey, Manaavey Mlah, Svaadat Jee Sanghaarey.
Aapaa Deldi Avar Nahin Dekhey,Kaahey Kow Jhakh Maarey" (pg. 1375)

You keep fasts (i.e., religious acts) to appease God. At the same time you slay life for your relish.
This utter selfishness is nothing but empty or nonsensical talk.

"Kabir Jee Jo Maareh Jor Kar,Kaahtey Heh Ju Halaal.
Daftar Daee Jab Kaadh Hai, Hoegaa Kaun Havaal" (pg. Kabir jee 1375)

Whosoever slays life by force and call it sanctified;
What will be his fate when he will be called to account for it in His Court?

Just because they dont run around doesnt mean they rnt living....what kinda ques is dat :?

Well common sense plays are large part don't you think! How can anyone justify killing an animal to eat (unless you have no other food)!

Hi again,

Thanks for the answer.

3 - The reason I asked about the Halal meat issue, is because of what I saw on this site.

4 - You mentioned that it is strictly prohibited, but is that sikh also an apostate if he eats halal meat?

1 - So can you post the verse in the Kuran that permitts you to eat meat?

2 - No i've not, but i'd be glad to read what you post in regard to it!

3 - Well like i say, differnt verses are sued to justify consuming it, and ohter verses are used to show it's forbidden!

4 - Yes it is!

1 - So can you post the verse in the Kuran that permitts you to eat meat?

1) He hath only forbidden you dead meat, and blood, and the flesh of swine, and that on which any other name hath been invoked besides that of Allah. But if one is forced by necessity, without wilful disobedience, nor transgressing due limits,- then is he guiltless. For Allah is Oft-forgiving Most Merciful.
Al-Baqara, Chapter #2, Verse #173

2)Forbidden to you (for food) are: dead meat, blood, the flesh of swine, and that on which hath been invoked the name of other than Allah. that which hath been killed by strangling, or by a violent blow, or by a headlong fall, or by being gored to death; that which hath been (partly) eaten by a wild animal; unless ye are able to slaughter it (in due form); that which is sacrificed on stone (altars); (forbidden) also is the division (of meat) by raffling with arrows: that is impiety. This day have those who reject faith given up all hope of your religion: yet fear them not but fear Me. This day have I perfected your religion for you, completed My favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion. But if any is forced by hunger, with no inclination to transgression, Allah is indeed Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful.

3) So eat of (meats) on which Allah.s name hath been pronounced, if ye have faith in His signs.
Al-Anaam, Chapter #6, Verse #118

4) Why should ye not eat of (meats) on which Allah.s name hath been pronounced, when He hath explained to you in detail what is forbidden to you - except under compulsion of necessity? But many do mislead (men) by their appetites unchecked by knowledge. Thy Lord knoweth best those who transgress.
Al-Anaam, Chapter #6, Verse #119

5) Eat not of (meats) on which Allah.s name hath not been pronounced: That would be impiety. But the evil ones ever inspire their friends to contend with you if ye were to obey them, ye would indeed be Pagans.
Al-Anaam, Chapter #6, Verse #121

Those are just a few. You can find the rest here

what she's trying to say is the justification of not eating meat is because its a living thing, however so are plants! maybe they arnt physically like animals however they are still living.
