Fishman, I can tell you by being a born muslim that it is same with me. Nothing to be suprise of, it happen's here in the UK (something I am dissapointed with) but inshallah we should not abandon the greeting, inshallah their will be some changes slowly.
Even I do greet and sometime get a blank stare.
Beard and Cap will make a little difference, I am sure it is not everything got to do with you being white.
=======================================================
If someone does say assalamu alaikum, the response should by walaikum assalam.

LOl bro fishman, I had the totally opposite problem, when I was a non-muslim, alot of Muslims used to say salam to me, and i'd be like 'Am not a Muslim bruv!' I used to get so offended. It got to the point that at college people used to call me to prayer, they'd be like 'Yo, come pray man' and I'd be like 'For real IM NOT MUSLIM' but they used to keep pushing me because they thought I used to be a non-practising muslim who didnt want to pray.

Anyhow, now am a Muslim, the older generation harldy even smile at me, and this is me, the same guy who the younger people before I became Muslim used to tell me to go pray lol, it is upseting, I mean I feel like such an idiot half of the time when I say Salam and I just get blanked.

But Alhamdulilah, I come on here and tell everyone I love them so that makes up for it :p

Eesa.

perhaps they were making du'a when they saw you! their timing was just a wee bit off!

:w:

What is with the struggle to be a recognised muslim? There is no need for others to think your a Muslim.

:sl:
I am growing a beard. But it is almost invisible unless you look really close.

:sl:
The problem is that if I say salam to people I don't know they think that I'm just a youth who wants to make fun of them by pretending to be Muslim. Loads of people do that to me at school.
:w:
insha'allah the beard will grow, the beard differs as to what age it grows for different people, for me it started growing rapidly at 14, but don't worry about that..

:sl:

loll firstly this title is so funny!

my husband is white n ppl start talking to him in urdu cuz he defo looks muslim n some ppl cant get their head around the fact that hes an english muslim lol some ppl really do live in the dark ages.

dnt let it get to u as long as u know n allah knows ur a muslim.

if ppl think u mock them then so be it, allah swt knows ur intention.

when ur older inshallah ur beard will grow thick n long n ppl will inshallah realise ur a muslim.

oh yea and dnt worry about ppl blanking u wen u giv them salam, i obviously stand out as a muslim cuz of the hijab etc etc and i giv salams n ppl still blank me! some times theyre just in their own world or something, but any ways, if they dnt reply to ur salams then the angels reply to them! subhanallah.

I know that it is recommended to wear a cap or kufi as a sign of Islam. But a few days ago I walked down the street in one, and nobody recognised that I was Muslim, not even other Muslims. People just thought I was wearing a weird hat. I think it comes down to this: I'm white, so nobody thinks of me as Muslim.
I can't change my name properly, I'm not allowed to wear Islamic clothes and having an Islamic cap on my head doesn't make any difference. Is there anything I can do to be identified as a Muslim?
:w:

:w:

You'll have to excuse some of the Muslims, some are quite ignorant, they believe only people of their own race/country are Muslims.

The way i recongise a brother is Muslim is by

1. By his beard
2. Trousers is above his ankle
3. and his Islamic cap.
4. Khamis

If he has either of those four followed by their distinctive Islamic manners e.g. lowering their gaze, I can see that they are Muslim.

:sl:

you know...my personal opinion is that...the people that dont reply to your salams have got some serious issues...i mean a muslim or not...a person greets you with peace and you return the same...not a hostile look of hatred...it is not because you are a white...because it is not very uncommon these days having white muslims...unless them people are tooooo ignorant...but it is probably cause they are baffled when they see a "kid" your age as a muslim....

:D

Assalmualikum warhmathullahi warbarakathuhu

i understand Akhi same here am white && many womens out there think am just being sarcastic to there religion well am NOT i feel thy same aswel at times i always try my best but then again who cares if were not muslims i mean we reverted to the right religion Allah subhanwatallah knows our intention he knows we are muslims so whom are we doing this for people or Allah:?

i understand because me self is in thy same position like i said but remember one thing in few years time you will have a beard && what so not but even 'jews' have beards so be careful about that one, maybe you can have a tasbeh in your hand && read that when ya walking or something like that, as for your parents issue it's very hard for you && me because ALL of me family don't believe in Islam neither so yeah tuff thing but inshallah Allah subhanwatallah will understand so chillax dearest bro also you are small after all your a teen 15 && am 21 so tuff job but gotcha be done inshallah :)

do me a favour remember me in your Du3'ah, shukran

walikumassalm warhmathullahi warbarakathuhu

This thread is kinda upsetting lol, all the kinda 'key symbols' by which others recognise Muslims, are those that I tend to lack in lol.

Bro as for the beard, well your white, so inshaAlllah your beard will grow and because of your colour it will stand out, lol am from east africa, and trust our beards hardly grow, and I dont mean when we are teens, I mean TOTALLY lol, am touchin 20 and well its not lookin very promising lol.

But dont worry akhi, give me your description and I'll come round your area and say salam whenever I see ya ;)

Yes, I think being a kid is another problem, since almost all the kids in my school love mocking 'izlam' anyway. The conversations go like this:
Guy: Are you muzlim?
Me: Yes.
Guy (to his friends): Look, it's the muzlim!
Guy (to me): Do you do that 'Allah, Allah' thing (starts mocking prayer or reading Quran)
Guy 2: Hey, I know your religion! You worship that elephant man called vishnu, don't you?
Me: No, that's Hinduism
Guy 3: You can't be a Muslim! Where's your turban? And where's your dress? And where's your little doggie (yes, he did say that)?
(I walk away)

With things like this happening all the time, I think it's very hard for somebody to trust me when I say salam.

Sorry brother Im totally confused by this reply?
:?

:sl:

my bad, i missed this! :embarrass

we make du'a for the Ummah; perhaps the recognized your (potential)Iman, maybe your nur and thusly greeted you as a Muslim!

after all, they weren't wrong! just a bit premature!

Here's my Tip: Get rid of the dog! :shade:

Now you should see some changes.

wear one of them hoodies with "soldier of Allah" :p on the back, but preferably not on tube as i will tell u frm personal experience :D:D:D

but but but :D:D:D you can always wear them obvious prayer hats, and even if no one still recognises your not muslim, remember inside you know your muslim and so does Allah (swt) know your muslim:D :D:D:D and thats enough :D:D:D
