An Egyptian court ruled against a presidential order that a group of Muslim Brotherhood members stand trial in a military court.

The 40 Brotherhood members, who went on trial in April, include the group’s chief strategist and main financier, Khayrat el-Shatir.

They are expected to be charged with membership of a banned organization, money laundry and funding terrorism.

It was the first time since 2001 that Brotherhood members had stood a military trial.

A civilian court has twice ordered the release of al-Shatir and the other defendants, but Egyptian authorities overturned the rulings under the country’s emergency law.

The Muslim Brotherhood, which is outlawed in Egypt but normally tolerated, is the country’s most powerful opposition group.

The group made gains in the 2005 parliamentary elections. Its members, elected as independents, hold about one-fifth of the seats in the parliament, which is dominated by President Hosni Mubarak's National Democratic Party.

Brotherhood officials say the authorities stepped up pressure against the group in recent months to reduce its clout ahead of the elections to the upper house, known as the Shura Council, which are expected in June.

“The Egyptian regime is trying by every method to hit the Brotherhood early to prevent it from contesting the next Shura elections,” Brotherhood deputy leader Mohamed Habib said last month.

Gaining seats in the Shura Council could help the Muslim Brotherhood bypass a ban that prevents all but recognized political parties from running for president.

Presidential elections are not due until 2011.

My friend from Egypt said that she, as a real muslim would never vote for MB. What do you people here think about MB?

Mubarak just frames anyone who opposes him... read what became of the guy who ran against him in the phony sham or a presdential election he held... You think american news (fox) is bad... try Egypt's govt. funded BS... the state of the world is most disheartening... I can tell you this much.. anyone poor, miserable suffers and greatly ... everyone else sits on the throne like George the V of England! just afraid for his seat.

i find it interesting that an outlawed party runs in elections and participates in the government.

People only want a military court if they believe a civil one won't deliver the verdict they want.

They’re a little bit more than just a political group.

Al-Ikhwan al-Muslimeen, The Muslim Brotherhood, has basically restated the terms and established the groundwork for the continuation of jihad and how Islam will respond to modernity, all in the context of the expanding influence of Western, secular institutions and their continuing successes in the face of the continuing dissolution of Islamic influence.

If you want to understand jihad, understand their slogan:

Allah is our objective.
The messenger is our leader.
Quran is our law.
Jihad is our way.
Dying in the way of Allah is our highest hope.

Allah is our God not objected
Prophet Mohamed (P.B.U.H) is our rolemodel also his our leader during his lifetime.
Quran and Sunnah is way of our life.
Jihad as does have to be holywar or violance as the American media define that way. Jihad is also self struggle against satan;examples are like fasting, praying and reading Quran.
They are certain times people die for the sake of Allah, like the time of conflicts. Muslims want peace in this world not wars and hate rage.

What did secular bring to egypt? except the government violating human rights laws and economy not doing well enough. Husni Mubarak is not respecting Islamic values. People in egypt does want him as a leader anymore. His been in the office over 20 years; egypt economy is behind other middle east nations.

The only reason MB end up in the military court is because Husni Mubarak desired to stay in power and torture anybody who is against him.
