Biologists have long assumed (Predicted) that wether a species evolved to have seperate male & females or to combine both has a lot to do with a species mobility.
Slow moving animals are unlikely to encounter many mates and should thus be Hermaphrodites, if all else fails they can mate with themselves.
More wide ranging species can afford to have seperate sexes, allowing them to enjoy the benefits of outcrossing (Mixing genes with unrelated individuals). This prediction of Evolution has never been tested
.............Until Now
(Journel of Evolutionary Biology, vol 21, p 727)
Sure enough, comparing the mating system and mobility of all 122 classes of multicellular organisms they found classes with limbs, wings or swimming muscles tend to have seperate sexes. Sedentary organisms were more likely to be hermathrodites
