The tail is visible when the fetus is about 1 month old because the body frame as not fully developed yet. The "tail" sticks out from the body because the formation of the spine has not developed yet. This "tail" forms into our tailbone or coccyx and this keeps us in a up right position. This small little bone is said to be one of the most important bones in the entire body, because of it's functions.

Hope this helps, I was wondering myself, so I had to go look it up!
