    Risks of getting diabetes

    Report bad ads?

For now Alhamdulillah... my sugar level is at the right amount (erm...i think so...)

But i'm abit skeptical on all the tips of prevention of diabetes. I do believe it helps a little...but for me not much.

I'm so afraid that i'll get it when i'm at that age...since my family history mostly after 45 they have diabetes. And i delivered big baby too...for my size especially which is 4kg.

My lifestyles...are i'm always on the go...but i only exercise when i have the time, the reason is i don't really know how to get into those aerobics or home exercises. and on the eating habit... i admit i love sweet things...but not too much but i can say that i seldom take plain water (even i love drinking it), eat plain food.. and etc.

My mother said "La...we have duas...so why are thinking the negative things". I'm not... but i have this strong feeling that i may get it one day...

    Re: Risks of getting diabetes

may Allah (swt) protect you. Only a doctor on these forums can suggest you something in regards to preventive measures. We all know who that is. So wait for her opinion, inshAllah.

But other factors to remember are viral infections which one could have had when they were child. So insulin-dependent diabetes (type I) is not always genetic, it could be induced by viral destruction of beta cells. Did your relatives ever get viral infections such as from mumps or others? What sort of diabetes they had?

P.S. It took me a while to figure that its a slice of cake in your avatar? You need to stop eating that thing.

other than sugar, you will also have to look out for food that contains high in carbs. Not to say that you should avoid carbs at all cost as our body still need carbs to survive. I guess moderation is always the best key. Insya'Allah Allah willing it can be prevented. As for physical activities, I admit I don't do a lot of physical activities. Perhaps you can try and get involve in sports such as tennis, or do brisk walk or walk at the park everyday abt 30 mins. Something such as simple was walking can burn up a lot of calories or so I heard. Or you can get a wii fit/wii sports. Wii makes exercise a lot more fun though it does get boring after awhile.

    here is a good article:
    http://www.emedicinehealth.com/diabetes/article_em.htm

try to have a workout that makes you sweat at least 3 times a week and avoid all kinds of artificial or refined sugars..I think we are collectively weaker than generations passed for even the soil used for planting lacks certain minerals that are needed for biochemical functions in the body.. we all feel weak and tired all the time just ten minutes after waking up so the first thing we do is reach for a cup of coffee .. most of our problems stem from poor diet and sedentary lifestyle..

    and Allah swt knows best

    Re: Risks of getting diabetes

I understand your fear sister, I'm worried about getting diabetes too. The entire dutch side of my family has developed it, along with my dad who had it before he passed away.

I try my best to avoid fructose (unless from fruit where you get it naturally along with fiber) - the best thing is to avoid all drinks with fructose. Only drink water, tea and coffee. When I get a strong sugar craving (I'm a sugar addict!) I put a teaspoon or 2 of honey in herbal tea and it usually calms the sugar cravings. Also dark chocolate helps and is good for you MashAllah.

Trying to exercise is really hard. Recently I've been following yoga videos on youtube. It's free and you feel -amazing- after.

From my understanding of Islam, nothing will happen to us that is not willed by Allah. If Allah wills us to have diabetes then we have to accept that. But also we are accountable for how we treat our bodies and must try our best to be healthy.

I pray Allah blesses you with good health sister...

    Re: Risks of getting diabetes

You can't say "i will" have the disease. This only increases your chances of having type 2 diabetes. Heredity plays a part in diabetes, but only 30 per cent of people with Type 2 have a family history of diabetes.

If you are white and over 40 years old, or if you’re black, Asian or from a minority ethnic group and over 25 years old and have one or more of the following risk factors, you should ask your GP for a test for diabetes.

    Risk factors:
    • A close member of your family has Type 2 diabetes (parent or brother or sister).
    • You’re overweight or if your waist is 31.5 inches or over for women; 35 inches or over for Asian men and 37 inches or over for white and black men.
    • You have high blood pressure or you’ve had a heart attack or a stroke.
    • You’re a woman with polycystic ovary syndrome and you are overweight.
    • You’ve been told you have impaired glucose tolerance or impaired fasting
      glycaemia.
    • If you’re a woman and you’ve had gestational diabetes.
    • You have severe mental health problems.
The more risk factors that apply to you, the greater your risk of having diabetes.

You just need to avoid the associated risk factors that will increase your chances of developing diabetes.

My dad has diabetes and his dad had it too but i know i won't develop it because we don't have the same lifestyle as my dad and his dad did anymore. We eat healthy and there is much emphasis on exercise.

I am not an expert so please ask your G.P/pharmacist for advice and insh'Allah everything will be ok.

    Re: Risks of getting diabetes

    I don't think i can avoid choclates...
or refined sugar and i think even dark choc contains lots of sugar...unless the choc powder with no sugars

I'm not sure if i really 'sweat' because i'm the type who don't sweat easily...even after 3km of jogs...

I'm just worried because i have met two uncles of mine...who is in a good shape (not overweight) really controlled their diets (I mean they really take it seriously), physically hard working (doing chores and helping neighbours with repair and etc) but at the end of the day they still get it.

My grandmother from both of my father and mother side...died because of diabetes. My mother Alhamdulillah is healthy...but i guess we seldom do checkups... But all of my aunties and uncles have diabetes (all together are 7) except for the youngest one.

I'm just very skeptical with the preventions tips given by the internet...

    Re: Risks of getting diabetes

The chances of getting Type 1 diabetes if the following member has it:

    -Sibling(brother or sister) (1 in 20 chance)
    -Identical twin (1in 2 to 3 chance)
    -Mother (1 in 50 to 100 chance)
    -Father (1 in 16 to 20 chance)
    - No family member ( 1 in 250 to 400 chance)

    Risks of Type 2 diabetes:
-Having an African,Hispanic,Aboriginal, or Asian background.
    -Not doing enough physical activity.
    -being overweight(obese).
-Having a strong family history of diabetes

I dont know the preventions, but just always exercise and eat healthy and inshaAllah things will go fine.
