Smoking is not allowed in Islam

Smoking is one of the most harmful in the world, it has dangerous impacts on one’s health as well as it is considered as waste of money. Islam has enjoined us to take care of our health and also avoiding wasting wealth. Allah does not like extravagance as He says:

O children of Adam, take your adornment [i.e., wear your clothing] at every masjid, and eat and drink, but be not excessive. Indeed, He likes not those who commit excess. (7:31)

And give the relative his right, and [also] the poor and the traveler, and do not spend wastefully. (17:26)

He also likens those who waste as brothers of the Shaytan.

Indeed, the wasteful are brothers of the devils, and ever has Satan been to his Lord ungrateful. (17:27)

He also says:

And [they are] those who, when they spend, do so not excessively or sparingly but are ever, between that, [justly] moderate (25:67)

We often do not care about our health which is one of the biggest blessing from Allah. Anyone who end up having terminal illness or have disease that leads to any of their parts stopping to work by will of Allah will realise the importance of their health. Prophet peace be upon him said:

"There are two blessings that many people are deceived into losing: health and free time." (Sahih Bukhari 6412)
Smoking has been known to have great deal of side effects such as cancers, poor eye vision as well as damages lung. According to Healthline:
According to the American Lung Association, cigarettes contain about 600 ingredients. Many of these ingredients are also in cigars and hookahs. When they burn, they generate more than 7,000 chemicals, many of which are toxic. At least 69 of them are carcinogenic, or known to cause cancer.
In the United States, the mortality rate for smokers is three times that of people who never smoked. In fact, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) note that smoking is the most common preventable cause of death in the United States.

While not all the effects of smoking are immediate, the complications and damage can last for years. The good news is that quitting smoking can reduce many risk factors for the conditions and diseases below.

Overall health and cancer risk

Smoking can harm the organs in your body and negatively impact your overall health.

Smoking can increase inflammation throughout your body and negatively affect your immune system. This may make you more susceptible to infection.
Smoking is an environmental risk factor for conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, though researchers do not yet understand the mechanism behind the connection.
A well-studied link also exists between smoking and many types of cancer. Smoking can increase your risk of developing cancer almost anywhere in your body. This includes the following cancer types:

  • bladder cancer
  • acute myeloid leukemia
  • cervical cancer
  • colorectal cancer
  • esophageal cancer
  • kidney and uterine cancer
  • laryngeal cancer
  • liver cancer
  • oropharyngeal cancer (which can include parts of your throat, tongue, tonsils, and soft palate)
  • pancreatic cancer
  • stomach or gastric cancer
  • tracheal, bronchial, and lung cancer

If you quit smoking, the risk of developing most of these types of cancers decreases in about 10 to 20 years, depending on the type of cancer. However, your risk will still be higher than that of people who have never smoked.

Allah forbade us to harm ourselves or anyone. He says:

And do not kill yourselves [or one another]. Indeed, Allāh is to you ever Merciful. (4:29)

Prophet peace be upon him taught us that our bodies has rights over us.

“Your body has a right over you” (Bukhari 5199)
Some people would defend smoking, saying that life and death are controlled by Allah. This is not correct thinking but rather this is from their desires. Allah has created good and harmful things to test us in this world. Would anyone with sane mind able to drink poison, thinking that Allah will let him live? Allah and His Messenger already have ordered us to not harm ourselves.
